After suffering a 21-7 loss to Nemaha Central in the opening game of district play a week ago, the Sabetha football team knew they had to have a strong showing Friday night against Hiawatha to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Bluejays did just that, dominating all facets in a 70-6 beat down of the Redhawks at home in week two of district play.

Sabetha wasted no time jumping out in front of the Redhawks racing out to a 28-0 lead after the first quarter. Four different guys got into the end zone on the ground in quarter No. 1, as Wyatt Beyer started the scoring followed by touchdown runs by Joe Gruber, Brandon Brownlee and Gabe Garber.

The Bluejays would score five more times in the second quarter, all on the ground, to take a 57-6 lead into halftime and force a running clock the entirety of the second half.

Hiawatha’s lone score came early in the second quarter on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Brockhoff to Michael Moreno, but the Redhawks struggled to get anything going on the ground finishing with just 71 total rushing yards and 208 yards total.

Eight different guys found pay dirt for Sabetha on the night as Wyatt Beyer and Gabe Garber each recorded two touchdowns, while Joel Hackney, Mason Engelken, Brandon Brownlee, Joe Gruber and Andrew Frazee each picked up scores on the ground.

The Bluejays finished with 321 rushing yards, led by Gabe Garber who finished with 89 yards on eight carries while Joel Hackney added 61 yards on just three rushes.

The win gives Sabetha (7-1, 1-1 districts) an opportunity to get into the playoffs for the ninth straight season with a win at home against Riverside (2-6, 1-1) Thursday, while Hiawatha (2-6, 0-2) will wrap up the season Thursday night at Nemaha Central (8-0, 2-0).
