Both Wetmore and Blue Valley entered Week seven of the high school football season looking to put some rough performances in the rear view mirror and get in the win column on the gridiron. The Cardinals took flight early and rode a strong defensive performance to earn the 42-8 win.

After a three and out by the Wetmore defense against Blue Valley the Cardinals offense would score plenty of times in the first half. The first visit to pay-dirt was on a 59-yard touchdown pass from Joel Hutfles to Kyler Vance making it 6-0 with 8:57 left in the first quarter. The Rams however had an answer scoring the on ensuing drive capping their drive with a 13-yard touchdown run by Dylan Krause and with a two-point conversion on a Lane Peter run the Rams owned the 8-6 lead with 5:31 remaining in the first quarter. The rest of the scoring was done by Wetmore as they regained the lead on a five-yard touchdown run by Vance and two-point conversion made it 14-8.

In the second quarter Wetmore got a pair of touchdown runs by Hutfles from four and one-yard out to make it 30-8. The second rushing touchdown drive came after a Vance interception stopped a Rams drive. The Rams were driving towards a potential score at the end of the first half but the Cardinals get a few negative plays to back up Blue Valley forcing them to punt with just a few seconds left in the first half and Hutfles busted a 55-yard punt return to extend the Wetmore lead to 36-8 as the action headed into halftime.

Both teams started slow in the second half but Wetmore found the endzone again in the third quarter on a Vance one-yard touchdown run his second of the season making it 42-8. The Cardinals continued throughout the rest of the game to stymie Blue Valley's offense even ending at potential scoring drive with a Beau Henninger interception in the endzone.

Wetmore in the win ran the ball for over 260 yards as a team with Hutfles and Vance leading the charge as Joel had 110 yards on 16 carries with two scores and Vance ran for 132 yards on 16 carries with two scores. Huftles and Vance hooked up for the touchdown pass as Joel was 4-6 for 72 yards with three receptions going to Vance. The Cardinal defense was perhaps the story of the game earning Community National Bank "Player's to Bank On" honors on 92.1 KMZA radio after holding Blue Valley to eight points and forcing three turnovers (two interceptions and one fumble recovery).

Blue Valley in the loss had Dylan Krause go 10-15 for 106 yards and ran for a touchdown, while Lane Peter had seven catches for 59 yards.

The win moves Wetmore to 3-4 on the season, while Blue Valley falls to 1-6 on the year. Both teams continue their season next week with District and League matchups as Blue Valley will host Axtell while Wetmore plays host to Frankfort.
