A pair of Northeast Kansas League legion baseball doubleheaders continued the season on Thursday night as Sabetha hosted Doniphan County and Silver Lake welcomed Oskaloosa to town. 

All four teams picked up a win on the night as each doubleheader was split between the two squads. Doniphan County took game one in routing fashion 12-1 in four innings over Sabetha, but Sabetha bounced back with a 9-8 win in the nightcap getting a pair of runs in the bottom fifth for walk-off win. Silver Lake controlled game one over Oskaloosa earning the 7-1 win, but solid pitching lifted Oskaloosa to the game two win 4-0. 

The legion baseball season continues over the weekend as Silver Lake is set to host Leavenworth on Saturday in a doubleheader. While on Sunday Doniphan County travels to Corning and Sabetha will head to Oskaloosa for twinbills. 

Doniphan County & Sabetha Split League Tilt

At Somerset Park on Thursday it was a tale of two different games between Doniphan County and Sabetha as each team picked up a win. Doniphan County took game one 12-1 in just four innings, while Sabetha won in walk-off fashion in game two 9-8. 

The offensive party started early for Doniphan County in game one as they recorded six-hits and drew two walks to score six runs in the top of the first inning. Four of the six hits were extra base hits including a three-run homer by Wil Smith and RBI doubles by both Levi Watts and Clayton Ridout. Sabetha in the bottom of the first notched three hits and tallied a run on an RBI single by Blake Frey but after one trailed 6-1. Offensive production continued for Doniphan County in the second scoring four runs on three hits and an error to lead 10-1 and then added another run in the third and fourth innings each. Sabetha after going down in order in the second and third need runs to continue the game in the bottom of the fourth but manage just a walk in the inning and Doniphan County finished the contest 12-1 in four innings. 

Zeb Speer led the way on the mound for Doniphan County earning the win tossing all four innings giving up one run on three hits, a walk and struckout four. While Chris Winkel helped led a 12-hit attack offensively going 3-3 with a triple, double and three runs scored. Speer and Winkel both earned McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on KNZA. Greaser chipped in a 3-4 day, while Ridout was 2-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. 

In the loss Sabetha used a trio of pitchers while only recording three hits as Brett Stallbaumer was 1-2 with a double and run scored, Frey was 1-2 with an RBI and Seth Burdick was 1-1 with a walk. 

Game two started with a double, single and two RBI single for Doniphan County to get on the board in the first as they added another run to lead 3-0 before Sabetha took a swing. In the bottom of the first Sabetha answered with four runs on three hits, a walk and error to take 4-3 lead with a two RBI single by Gabe Garber highlighting the inning. Doniphan County swung the lead back to their favor in top second as they worked the bases loaded and a bases clearing double by Winkel made it 6-4. Sabetha once again had a answer themselves scoring three runs on one hit and three errors led regain the lead at 7-6. Doniphan County with a two RBI triple by Watts in the fourth went up 8-7. Entering the bottom of the fifth down one Sabetha got a one-out walk by Kyle Grimm and Riley Hermann came in as a pinch runner. The walk was followed by a single then an RBI single by Stallbaumer to score Hermann to tie the game. Preston Bruning then delivered a hit and brought in the winning run to give Sabetha the 9-8 victory. 

Stallbaumer lead Sabetha at the plate going 3-4 with two run scored and an RBI, while tossing the first four innings of the game. Joe Gruber threw the fifth inning and got the win, while Bruning was 2-4 at the plate. 

Doniphan County in the loss had Watts take the loss on the mound as he went the distance in the contest and was also 2-3 with two RBI. Greaser, Tyler Franken and Winkel each added two hits as Greaser had two walks and two run scored, Franken two runs scored and Winkel notched four RBI's. 

The split moved Sabetha to 22-6 on the season, while Doniphan County is now 15-7 on the season. 

Silver Lake & Oskaloosa Split League Doubleheader

Both Silver Lake and Oskaloosa each picked up a League win on Thursday as they split their doubleheader with Silver Lake taking game one 7-1 and Oskaloosa winning 4-0 in game two. 

Using two walks and a passed ball Oskaloosa took the 1-0 lead in the top of the first but Silver Lake with a Justin Keller double and Garret Huske RBI single tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Silver Lake took the lead with a run in the bottom of the third on a Josh Boyd RBI single. Game remained 2-1 until bottom of the sixth when Silver Lake solidified the game in their favor with five runs on two walks and three hits including a three-run Justin Keller homer and went on to win 7-1. 

Keller led the offense for Silver Lake going 2-3 with a three-run homer and double, while Silver Lake out-hit Oskaloosa 10-4 in the contest. Jake Lindstrom earned the win going six and two-thirds giving up one run on four hits, six walks and eight strikeouts. 

In the loss Oskaloosa had Hunter Reed and Seth Coltrane combined to give up seven runs on 10-hits and three walks, while Coltrane along with Cooper Thurston, Tucker Sherretts and Diego Cervantez each had a hit. 

Game two saw Oskaloosa take the early lead going up 2-0 in the top of the second on two walks, a RBI double by Heath Knopp and an RBI groundout. Thurston recorded an RBI single in the top third and Oskaloosa tallied another run in the fifth going on to earn the 4-0 win. 

Dawson Gatzemeyer was tough on the mound earning the win for Oskaloosa tossing the complete game shutout giving up just one hit and four walks with three strikeouts. Thurston led the offense with a 2-3 showing with an RBI. Silver Lake in the loss had their lone hit come from Brady Snook, while Kyle Frick took the loss on the mound tossing four innings giving up four runs on six hits, five walks and seven strikeouts. 

The split moved Silver Lake to 13-7 on the season, while Oskaloosa is now 14-9 on the year.
