Benedictine Women Drop NAIA Tournamnet First Round Thriller to John Brown
By Jonny Kane

In the season opener Nov. 1, the Benedictine women’s basketball team went on the road and fell to John Brown University 70-66 in a thriller.

Unfortunately for the Lady Ravens history repeated itself Friday night, as this time the No. 19-ranked Golden Eagles ended the season for the No. 13-ranked Benedictine women with a 74-72 win in the opening round of the 2017 NAIA Div. I Women's Basketball Championship in Billings, Montana.

After a slow start which saw the Ravens down by as many as six points in the first quarter, Benedictine was able to bounce back to take a two-point lead at 15-13 after one.

John Brown never faltered, though, as they came right back with a 17-point second quarter to take a two-point lead into halftime at 30-28. After both teams put up 25 points in the third quarter the Golden Eagles held onto a 55-53 advantage after three quarters setting up a fantastic finish.

The Ravens were able to get up by as many as four points in the fourth quarter, but John Brown seemed to have an answer all game long as they took a lead with just under two minutes left and never looked back.

Although the Ravens season ended prematurely, junior Kristin Murphy was able to break the Benedictine season scoring record with a third quarter bucket which put the record now at 538 points in a season.

The Raven women finished up the season at 25-9, and send off two seniors; Ali Taff and Haylee Beard who were both key pieces to the Ravens national tournament run.

Benedictine: Haylee Beard – 18, Kristen Murphy – 17, Ali Taff – 10, Serena Parker – 9, Lexie Villegas – 6, Maddie Minnaert --  4, Kayla Staley – 4, Saige Baalman – 2, Marissa Rich – 2.

John Brown: Bailey Cameron – 27, Kodee Powell – 14, Jana Schammel – 10, Kimmy Deines – 8, Preslea Reece – 5, Rosa Orpo – 5, Jordan Martin – 3, Sara Williams – 2.
