Onaga & Doniphan West Boys Secure Spots In 1A-DI Sub-State Title Game

For the fourth time this season Onaga and Doniphan West boys will play each other and this time it will be for the right to go to the Class 1A-Division I State tournament after both teams earned Semifinal wins on Friday night. Onaga topped Immaculata 50-26, while Doniphan West earned the 52-40 win over Frankfort. 

Tight early in the first quarter Onaga got a Brendan Melvin three-pointer in the final seconds of the first quarter to hold a 9-7 lead after the first quarter and the Buffaloes would hold onto the lead the rest of the way. The lead grew in the second quarter with a 14-9 frame and Onaga carried a 23-16 lead into halftime. Coming out of the second half Onaga pushed the lead to double figures in the first minute of the third quarter and went on to outscore Immaculata 27-10 in the second half and won 50-26 behind balanced scoring in which the team had five guys with six plus points each on the night. 

In the loss Immaculata was led by Zach Schwinn who tallied 17 points but the Raiders closed out their season and final basketball year with a 7-14 record. 

Onaga with the win improved to 16-6 on the season and was led by Tanner Marten who scored 14 points and earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Ben Kufahl added 10 points in the win. 

In the nightcap the game was tied 2-2 early when Doniphan West went on an 8-0 run to lead 10-2 with 5:18 left in the first quarter and by the end of the quarter the Mustangs were up 15-9 over Frankfort. The lead grew to as high as 21-9 in the second for Doniphan West but Frankfort went into the half down just 24-17. A 5-0 run to start the second half in the first minute of the third drew Frankfort to within two points but Doniphan West answered and by the end of the third the lead remained seven for the Mustangs and Doniphan West closed the game with a 14-9 fourth to snag the 52-40 win. 

The loss wraps up the season for Frankfort with a 9-13 record as Brandon Anderson led the team in scoring with 10 points, while Jedd Rose scored nine points. 

Doniphan West improved to 14-9 on the season with the win and was led by Luke Blevins and Levi Watts with 13 points each. Blevins finished 9-10 from the free throw line as his team was 20-29 from the line in the win and Luke's performance earned him Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Newt Smith and Devin Taylor each chipped in 10 points for the Mustangs. 

The 1A-DI Sub-State Championship game on Saturday, March 4th between Doniphan West and Onaga will mark the fourth meeting between the two teams this season with the Buffaloes winning the previous three. The action will tip at around 7:30pm in Centralia and will be broadcasted on 92.1 KMZA.
