Troy Topples Onaga in TVL Sweep

It was a Twin Valley League sweep for Troy at Onaga on Tuesday, although neither Trojan team could put the game away until the final quarter.

GIRLS = Troy 40, Onaga 24

Both teams have struggled offensively through much of the season and that was the case early with Troy holding a 4-2 advantage after one quarter.  Freshman Morgan Masters came off the bench and scored a pair of buckets in the second stanza as Troy used an 11-6 quarter to take a 15-8 lead into halftime. 

Troy stretched the lead to as many as 11 points in the second half, but didn't put the game away until a 16-8 fourth quarter run that included 10 made free throws.  Lexi Norris hit a trio of treys and scored 13 points while Masters and Kassi Meng each added 8 as Troy improved to 5-13 overall and 3-7 in the TVL.  Shay Duer scored 11 including a trio of three's and Alexis VanDonge added 8 the Lady Buffs had 17 turnovers and fell to 0-19 on the season. 

BOYS = Troy 59, Onaga 55

This game was tight throughout with neither team able to lead by more than eight points.  The lead changed hands eight times in the first half with Troy taking a 18-13 lead in the second quarter before Onaga went on a 10-2 run to forge ahead 23-20.  The second quarter spurt including three straight treys as Jaiden Kolterman hit one followed by a pair from Ben Kufahl. The Buffs led 28-22 late in the first half and stretched the lead to 34-26 just a couple minutes into the third quarter.  Troy answered with a 9-0 run to take a 35-34 lead, but Onaga again surged to close the frame and hit all six free throws to take a 46-41 advantage into the fourth period. 

Five straight points by Wyatt Huss helped ignite an 18-9 Troy finish to the game and Reid Greaser and Cuttar Huss each hit a pair of one-and-one free throw opportunities in the final 20 seconds to keep the Trojans with a two-possession lead.  Cuttar scored 20 points while Wyatt had 12 and Wil Smith was steady inside with a 14-point night as Troy improved to 16-2 overall and stayed a top the TVL with a 10-0 record.  Onaga outrebounded Troy and shot the ball well, but had five costly turnovers in the final quarter before falling to 9-2 in the League and 13-6 overall with their second straight loss.  Tanner Marten scored 18 points while Kufahl had 12 and Tyler Herrman added 11 for the Buffaloes.
