It was makeup games from December 16th and the Doniphan West Mustangs made the most of them with impressive second halves and pulled away late for a pair of wins against non-league foe, Horton.

The first half was a game of back and forth runs with both teams holding leads of four points and the Mustangs holding a 25-24 halftime advantage.  However, D-West outscorede Horton 35-22 in the second half as the Chargers struggled with foul trouble and 18 turnovers.  The Lady Mustangs made 21 of 37 free throws including 8 of 10 in the fourth quarter to seal their third win in the last 10 games.

Mia Scott scored a season high 20 points, including five straight free throws and a couple breakaway transition buckets off Horton turnovers to push the lead into double-digits.  Calli Caudle played very well and nearly posted a double-double with 9 of her 13 points in the first half while Makinley Smith scored 9 of her 12 in the decisive third quarter as Doniphan West girls improved to 7-12 on the season.  Horton was just 8 of 16 at the stripe and was led by Madison Blackburn with 11 points and Daspin Brunning with 9 before falling to 10-6 on the season.

BOYS = Doniphan West 55, Horton 50

Both teams scored the ball well early in the game, but the Mustangs were very efficient on offense in the second quarter while building the margin up to 13 points twice and getting numerous assists and layups in their half-court offense.  Joe Winsea hit a trey for the Chargers to pull them within 30-20 at intermission and the momentum carried into the third period as D-West got sloppy with seven turnovers and Horton went on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 32.

The Chargers took their first lead (36-35) since the opening minutes on a shot by Rylee Rodvelt with 45 seconds left in the stanza, but Levi Watts hit a trey to edge the Mustangs back ahead 38-36 heading into the fourth frame.  D-West, a team that makes 70 percent of their free throws this season, hit 10 of 13 at the line to put the game away and keep Horton at arms distance on the scoreboard in the final minutes.

Devin Taylor scored 20 points while Levi Watts had 13 and Newt Smith added 11 as the Mustangs improved to 11-8 on the season. Craig Wahwahsuck and Cole Bottom each notched 13 points for the Chargers and Winsea added 9 before Horton fell to 8-8 on the season with their seventh loss in their last nine contests.
