Holton Wildcats Win Big Seven League Wrestling Title

The regular season wrapped up on Saturday for wrestling with all the Big Seven grapplers facing off in the League Tournament hosted by ACCHS in Effingham. 

While all the schools in action had a top three performance, it was the Holton Wildcats claiming the Big Seven League title as a team yet again after posting 158 points. Riverside Cyclones took second place with 124 points, while both Sabetha and Perry Lecompton tied for third with 116 total points each. Royal Valley, ACCHS, Jeff West and Hiawatha rounded out the team standings finishing fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. 

Six individual League champions led Holton to the team title, while the Wildcats also had a second, third and two fourth place finishers on the day. Taygen Fletcher (113lbs), Kolby Roush (120lbs), Lawson Henry (132lbs), Logan Cannon (160lbs), Tyler Price (170lbs) and Kyler Tannahill (285lbs) all finished the day winning all their matches to take first place. Cannon registered a 3-0 day on the mats with a 4-2 sudden victory, 7-6 decision win and pinfall win in 56 seconds. The rest of the first place finishers for Holton all recored 2-0 days on the mats as Fletcher won via a 42 second pinfall and 1-0 decision and Roush won by a 9-2 decision and by a pinfall in 52 seconds. Henry won his two matches by a 12-10 decision and pinfall in 1:04, while Price registered a pair of pinfall wins in 1:49 and 2:08 and Tannahill notched two pinfall wins also his coming in 18 seconds and 2:40. 

A 1-1 day for Cameron Smith earned him second place at 106lbs for Holton, while Cael Jackson went 2-1 on the mats at the League tournament and finished third at 145lbs. Both Dylan Aeschliman (182lbs) and Tel Wittmer (220lbs) each took home fourth place finishes after posting 1-2 days on the mats for Holton. 

Riverside Cyclones had a trio of grapplers claim individual League titles as Beau Horn (126lbs), Scott Resler (145lbs) and Donovan Duncan (220lbs) each took first place. Horn picked up a 10-1 major decision win and 8-7 decision victory to go 2-0 and win the 126lbs weight class, while Resler went 3-0 on the day with a 19-1 technical fall win, 11-2 major decision and 15-0 technical fall victory. Duncan like Resler recorded a 3-0 day on the mats winning his matches by 3-1 decision, 4-2 tiebreaker and pinfall in 2:42. Second place finish was earned by Luke Horn who behind a 2-1 day on the mats took second at 138lbs, while Kinstin Juhl (152lbs) and Jacob MacKnight (182lbs) each took third place after going 3-1 and 1-1, respectively. A trio of Cyclones also earned fourth place finishes at League as Derrick Karn (132lbs), Drew Trump (195lbs) and Gaige Olivero (285lbs) placed fourth. 

A pair of first place finishes paced Sabetha Bluejays at the Big Seven League tournament as Cauy Rokey (182lbs) and Kamden Brownlee (152lbs) each took first. Rokey went 2-0 with an 8-1 decision win and pinfall victory in 33 seconds, while Brownlee recorded a 3-0 day with two pinfall wins in 1:49 and 5:09 and also a 2-0 decision victory. Three Bluejays brought home second place finishes as Elliot Strahm (285lbs), Brendan Rokey (195lbs) and Tanner Ukele (170lbs) all posted marks of 1-1 on the mats to take second. A 1-1 day by Cole Oehm earned him third place at 160lbs for Sabetha, while Brandon Brownlee (145lbs) and Corbin Halls (138lbs) each took fourth place for Sabetha. 

Torin Van Nest (152lbs), Nick Quinlan (145lbs), Grant Roush (126lbs), Wyatt Pringle (120lbs) and Dalton Kahle (113lbs) all notched second place finishes on Saturday at the Big Seven League tournament to lead Perry Lecompton. Van Nest, Roush and Pringle all recorded 1-1 days on the mats, while Kahle went 0-2 and Quinlan had a 2-1 day for the Kaws. Kyle Bonham (285lbs), Collin Rossillon (195lbs) Joel Guess (138lbs) and Braden Woodson (106lbs) all earned third place finishes posting records of 2-1, 1-1, 2-1 and 0-2, respectively. 

Going 2-0 with a pair of pinfall wins in 1:32 and 2:31 at 195lbs earned Jacob Box first place and an individual League title for the Royal Valley Panther. His teammate Blake Garrison at 220lbs went 1-1 and earned second place, while Zach Burger (170lbs), Brett House (132lbs) and Dalton Ware (120lbs) going 1-1, 3-1 and 2-1, respectively. Karsen Smith (152lbs) and Bryce Garrison (160lbs) both posted a fourth place finish for Royal Valley. 

With a 3-0 performance on the mats at 138lbs Hunter Ostertag earned first place for ACCHS while Austin Hager went 2-0 at 106lbs and took first place also for the Tigers. Ostertag won all three matches by pinfall in 22 seconds, 2:31 and 3:05, while Hager won by a 9-0 major decision and 4-0 decision. Dylan Birkinsha at 160lbs posted a 1-1 day on the mats to take second place, while Karl Scholz at 126lbs took third place with a 3-1 day and Colton Scholz at 120lbs took fourth place for ACCHS. 

Two second place finsihes by Chase Montgomery (182lbs) and Kody Gibson (132lbs) lead Jeff West Tigers at the Big Seven League tournament. Montgomery and Gibson each registered a 1-1 day on the mats for second place. Joel Scott was the only other Jeff West wrestler to register a top four finish as he finished fourth at 126lbs. 

Keenan Hinton (220lbs) and Dexter Campbell (170lbs) led Hiawatha at the League tournament placing third and fourth respectively. Hinton posted a 3-1 day on the mats for third place for Hiawatha. 

Wrestlers now turn their attention to Regionals coming up on February 17th and 18th as they will compete for the right to go to the State tournament. Holton and Jeff West will compete at the 4A Regional hosted by Santa Fe Trail, while the rest of the Big Seven will compete at the 3-2-1A Regional hosted by Wabaunsee.
