Saturday marked an historical even in Kansas as the first girls wrestling championship tournament took place hosted by McPherson. While girl's wrestling is not yet a KSHSAA sponsored sport over 100 girls currently compete in wrestling this year in high school with the boys according to KSHSAA and popularity of wrestling continues to grow among girls.

McPherson coach, Doug Kretzer took it upon himself to establish a girl’s wrestling championship tournament and 36 schools across the State were represented in the competition with over 50 wrestlers competing on the mats. Three area schools were represented at the first Kansas girl’s high school Championship wrestling tournament as Onaga, ACCHS and Jeff West had at least one wrestler in action.

Onaga's Morgan Mayginnes hit the mats at 132-138lbs at the event and finished the action 5-0 and State champion. Mayginnes picked up her first four wins of the tournament all via pinfall in 1:29, 4:30, 1:27 and 5:09 and finished the tournament with a tough 8-3 decision victory over a wrestler from Dodge City.

Going 2-0 at 195-220lbs Makaea Forbes earned first place at the State wrestling competition as she won both her matches by pinfall in less an 50 seconds, posting the wins in 47 and 48 seconds.

The Jeff West Tigers had two gals compete on the mats at the tournament and a 3-2 day by Montana Grahem earned her second place at 120-126lbs. After a loss by pin, Grahem responded to win her next three matches by pinfall in 1:00, 1:43 and 2:38 to make the first place match. In the first place match Grahem fell by pinfall to take second place. Jamie Winebrenner also competed for the Tigers finishing 10th after falling in all five of her matches in the tournament.

The tournament proved to be a great opportunity for girl wrestlers across Kansas and now the movement continues to have girls wrestling sanctioned by KSHSAA as its own sport to establish an official postseason tournament and more.
