Jeff West Girls and Boys Win Big Over ACCHS
By Jonny Kane

Behind 10 three-point baskets, the Jeff West girls’ basketball team maintained their spot at the top of the Big 7 League standings Tuesday night with a dominant 66-25 win over ACCHS in Effingham.

Jeff West, the No. 4-ranked team in 4A-II, wasted no time jumping on top of ACCHS outscoring the Tigers in orange 19-5 in the first quarter with sophomore Aaliyah Negonsott and junior Alyssa Garza combining for 14 points.

ACCHS finally got their offense going in the second quarter notching double figures, but Jeff West still won the quarter 13-10 to extend their lead to 18 points heading into halftime.

From there, Jeff West extended their lead to 30 after three quarters, forcing a running clock the entirety of the fourth.

The win kept Jeff West (11-3, 9-1 Big 7) in front of Nemaha Central and Holton in first place in the Big 7 with just one loss, and the Tigers will next be in action at Holton on Friday.

ACCHS (2-13, 1-10) remains at home for four of their final five remaining regular season contests beginning with Hiawatha in Effingham Friday.

BOYS

Despite a slow start, the Jeff West boys’ basketball team used a 20 point third quarter to take down ACCHS on the road in Effingham Friday night 50-24.

After Jeff West senior Nick Malloy delivered a 29-point performance in the first matchup back on Dec. 13, ACCHS decided to deploy a box-and-one on him to begin the game.

Because of this neither team was able to get much going offensively early, until Malloy shook free for a 3-pointer at the first quarter buzzer to give the Tigers from Meriden an 11-4 lead after one.

The second quarter was much of the same with both teams only combining for 16 points, as Jeff West led 21-10 at halftime on a 7 of 10 effort from the free throw line.

Jeff West then took the game over in the third quarter, as senior Hunter Dean drilled four 3-pointers to push their advantage to 25 after three to put the game away.

With the win Jeff West (7-8, 6-5 Big 7) moved into fifth place in the league standings and now head to Holton Friday, while ACCHS (0-15, 0-11) looks to pick up their first win of the season Friday hosting Hiawatha.
