2017 TVL Basketball Tournament -- Day 1 Recap

The 2017 Twin Valley League tournament got underway on Tuesday in Washington and there was plenty of action on the hardwood with 10 first round contests. Tuesday's action is recapped below.

Girls 

#9 Blue Valley vs. #8 Doniphan West -- Doniphan West won 49-39 

After the first bucket of the game by Blue Valley, Doniphan West strung a 7-0 run together to take control in the first but the game worked to a 9-9 tie. The Mustangs responded off the tie with a 9-0 run stretching from the end of the first into the second quarter with under two minutes left in the first half. Blue Valley got with four at 18-14 but Doniphan West moved the lead up and went into halftime up 24-16. Doniphan West fend off runs in the second half and pushed their lead further but the Rams would not go away quietly fighting and getting the lead down to three in the fourth, however balanced scoring and 11-16 from the charity stripe in the second half preserved the game for Doniphan West leading to their 49-39 win. Calli Caudle posted a season best 13 points to lead Donpihan West and earn Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA, while Mia Scott scored 10 points and Carlie Taylor chipped in nine as the Mustangs moved to 4-5 on the year. Blue Valley with the loss now sits at 2-6 on the year and was led by Sami Pfaff who scored 12 points. 

#13 Onaga vs. #4 Linn -- Linn won 34-22 

In a low scoring affair the Linn Bulldogs notched a first round tournament over Onaga working out to a 15-9 lead by halftime and adding to that with a 10-5 third quarter to secure the win 34-22 win. Karyson Smith led Linn in the win with 13 points, while Kaitlin Ohlde posted 12 points and Linn improved to 6-2 on the year. Onaga with the loss moved to 0-10 on the season and was led by Shay Duer who scored 10 points. 

#12 Axtell vs. #5 Wetmore -- Wetmore won 50-41 over Axtell

Wetmore Cardinals flew out of the gates to start the game against Axtell going up 10-2 with 3:00 left in the first quarter and led 18-6 after the first quarter was done. That lead grew to 20-8 but Axtell responded and got the lead down to three in the second quarter only to see Wetmore add a bucket and lead 24-19 at the half. In the second half it was the Axtell Eagles putting together a strong quarter winning the third 12-6 and taking the lead 31-30 into the fourth after taking as big as a four-point lead in the third. The fourth belonged to Josie Shumaker and the Wetmore Cardinals as Shumaker hit four three's in the final frame and the team went 9-16 from the line in the second half to post a 20-10 fourth and earn the 50-41 win. Shumaker had a season best 19 points hitting six three-pointers earning Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA, while Dakota McQueen added 12 points including 6-8 from the line, along with Jill Henry scoring 11 points as Wetmore moved to 5-3 on the season. Axtell fell to 1-8 on the year with the loss and was led by Anna Buessing who scored 15 points. 

#11 Troy vs. #6 Clifton-Clyde -- Clifton-Clyde won 43-37

Leading only 15-12 after the first quarter Clifton-Clyde doubled their score in the second outscoring Troy 15-6 in the quarter to lead 30-18 at the half. The Trojans didn't go away quietly fighting back with a 19-13 second half but came up just short falling 43-37. Baylie Bowser led Clifton-Clyde with 15 points, while Shaylea Lawson tallied 12 points and Clifton-Clyde improved to 7-4 on the year. The loss sends Troy to 1-6 on the season and Lexi Norris led the Trojans in the loss with 11 points, while Blair Weishaar scored 9 points. 

#10 Valley Heights vs. #7 Frankfort -- Frankfort won 32-30 

The final game of the night went down to the wire between Frankfort and Valley Heights and after two misses by Emilee Ebert in the final seconds of the game it was Jessa Yaussi with an offense board and shot at the buzzer that won the game for Frankfort 32-30. Valley Heights worked to a 6-2 start to the game but Frankfort finished the first quarter on an 8-0 run and led 10-6 and went up 10 at halftime 20-10 with Ebert scoring 15 of the Frankfort's 20 in the first half. Valley Heights in the second half made a push at Frankfort despite Kayla Smith playing limited minutes because of foul trouble and ultimately fouling out midway through the fourth as the Mustangs won the third quarter 12-6 ad made it a four-point game. That lead went away for Frankfort in the fourth as Valley Heights snagged the lead at 27-26 with 3:43 left in the game and then went up 30-26. Frankfort answered with four-points to have it tied at 30-30 with 2:48 left and it remained that way until Yaussi's buzzer beating shot for Frankfort. The win pushes the Wildcats to 6-4 and Ebert paced the team with 17 points earn Community National Bank "Player of the Game" on KMZA, along with Yaussi who hit the game winner and finished with eight points. Valley Heights with the loss falls to 2-7 on the year and was led by Sam Vermetten who scored eight points.

Boys

#9 Frankfort vs. #8 Centralia  --- Centralia won 61-46 

Frankfort started the game with a whirlwind start running out to an 11-0 lead with 1:58 to go in the first quarter before Centralia even got on the board and the Wildcats looked like they could run away with things early up 17-4 after one. The lead grew to as many as 17-points in the second quarter and Frankfort carried a 30-18 lead into the break. Centralia responded and with a 21-13 third quarter made it a four-point game entering the fourth. With 4:57 left in the game Centralia took their first lead and continued to push ahead going to to earn the comeback win 61-46. Freshman, Kamble Haverkamp led Centralia with 18 points a new season high earning him Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA as the Panthers moved to 5-4 on the season. The loss sends Frankfort to 4-6 on the year as they were led by Jedd Rose who scored 18 points and Mitchell Olson added 10 points. 

#13 Axtell vs. #4 Valley Heights -- Valley Heights won 45-30 

Valley Heights galloped out to a 12-6 lead after the first quarter against Axtell and went into the half up 17-8 adding to that margin in the second half to secure the 45-30 victory. The win puts Valley Heights at 6-3 on the season and Logan Woodyard led eight different Mustang scorers posting 12 points. Axtell in the loss fell to 0-9 on the year and was led by Quinn Buessing who tallied nine points on the night. 

#12 Blue Valley vs. #5 Doniphan West -- Doniphan West won 53-27 

A strong start to the game allowed Doniphan West to take control early of their first round showdown with Blue Valley going up 14-3 in the first quarter but a 7-0 run by the Rams closed the gap and it was 19-12 at the end of one. The Mustangs put together a strong second quarter led by eight points from Newt Smith in the frame and outscored Blue Valley 18-6 to lead 37-18 at the half. A 10-4 third quarter grew the lead from Doniphan West and they went on snag the 53-27 win. Levi Watts paced Doniphan West with 13 points and Smith contributed a 12 point day earning the duo Community National Bank co-"Players to Bank On" on KMZA as Doniphan West moved to 6-3 on the year. Blue Valley in the loss was led by Lane Peter who scored 10 points as the Rams are 0-9 on the year. 

#11 Wetmore vs. #6 Washington County -- Washington County won 51-30 

In what was a tight ballgame in the first half it was Washington County posting a 17-7 third quarter and 15-7 fourth to distance themselves from Wetmore to earn the 51-30 win. Wetmore held an 8-7 advantage after the first quarter, but went into halftime down only trailing 19-16. The loss sends Wetmore to 1-7 on the year and Ethan Osterhaus led them in the contest with 10 points. Washington County with the win is now 6-3 on the season and was led by Carson Talkington who scored 13 points, while Jae Eaton and Dawson Miller each chipped in 10 points. 

#10 Clifton-Clyde vs. #7 Linn -- Clifton-Clyde won 67-57

It was the only first round upset based on seed of the TVL Tournament in day one action as Clifton-Clyde flew to a 67-57 win over Linn in the seven versus 10 first round matchup. Both teams got some offense early in the game in the first as Clifton-Clyde led 22-19 and went into the half up 38-33. But a 16-11 third quarter by Linn tied the game going into the fourth and that quarter belonged to Clifton-Clyde who outscored the Bulldogs 18-8 in the quarter to take the game. The win moves Clifton-Clyde to 4-7 on the season and 12 points from Michael Cyr and Matt Barnes led the Eagles, while Zach Sorrell scored 11 points. Linn with the loss is now 4-4 on the season and was led by 19 points from Dillon Cooper, while Tanner Spence scored 17 and Chase McGatlin tallied 10 points.
