Clifton-Clyde Girls & Onaga Boys Snag League Basketball Wins

As the Twin Valley League tournament looms the Onaga Buffaloes welcomed Clifton-Clyde to town for make-up League contest and while the final margins were eight and 11 the contests were tight battles. 

The night started slow as Clifton-Clyde took the early 3-0 lead but Onaga answered with a 6-0 run forcing the Eagles into a timeout as they fell behind and had some turnovers during the Buffalo run. Clifton-Clyde responded with a 4-0 run of their own to lead 7-6 with 2:25 left in the first quarter but Onaga finished the first up 8-7. The lead swung back to the Eagles in the second at 11-10 with 5:13 on the clock and then went up to five points and stood at three, 17-14 at intermission with Clifton-Clyde leading. Onaga stayed with Clifton-Clyde in the but the Eagles made the plays to keep the Buffaloes at bay and got up eight in the fourth quarter only to see Onaga make another late run but ultimately a 13-7 fourth by the Eagles gave them the 37-29 win. 

Baylie Bowser paced Clifton-Clyde with 14 points, including nine of the teams 20 in the second half and earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Emily Coffman added eight points as the lady Eagles improved to 6-4 on the season and 4-3 in TVL play. 

The loss sends Onaga to 0-9 on the year and 0-4 in TVL action as they continue to search for win number one of the year. Shay Duer led Onaga with 11 points in the loss. 

Behind some early buckets in the first quarter by Matt Barnes and Michael Cyr Clifton-Clyde held a 10-8 lead in the final seconds of the first quarter of the boys game. But the Eagles actually found themselves down 12-10 at the end of the first after Luke Marten of Onaga threw up a wild three at the horn and banked it in and was fouled making the free throw for a four-point play to give the Buffaloes the two-point lead. Luke led the Buffaloes in the second quarter to a 15-7 frame and ultimately a 27-17 lead at halftime with Marten netting 11 points in the first. Clifton-Clyde Eagles flew out to a strong start in the second half drawing to within five points early in the third quarter but Onaga settled in and pushed the lead back out to double figures extending the lead to 14. The Eagles had another run in them getting back within single digits in the final 2:30 of the game but didn't get any closer than eight as Onaga made some late free throws and buckets to secure the 61-50 win after the teams combined for 42 points in the fourth. 

A quartet of double figure scorers paced Onaga who was down a player due to sickness as Tyler Herman led the Buffaloes with a season-high 18 points. Logan Marten tallied 14 points on the night, while Tanner and Luke Marten each scored 11 points. Herman and Luke Marten for their season-high performances earned Community National Bank co"Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Onaga with the win has won five in a row and now sit at 6-3 overall and 4-0 in the TVL. 

Clifton-Clyde with the loss fell to 3-7 on the season and 2-5 in TVL play, as Barnes paced the Eagles with 18 points, while Zach Sorrell netted 12 points. 

Both teams now turn their attention the annual TVL Tournament this year being held at Washington County.
