Troy Takes Down Jeff County North, Claims District Title
By Jonny Kane

The Troy Trojans entered their matchup with Jefferson County North averaging over 400 total yards of offense per game while also averaging over 45 points a contest.

The Chargers held the Trojans to just 282 total yards Friday night, but that didn’t matter as Troy made the big plays when they needed to, remaining unbeaten and claiming the Class 2-1A District 1 title with a 38-12 win over Jefferson County North in Winchester.

Troy’s high-scoring offense was forced to be slow and methodical on their opening drive of the game, taking nearly five minutes off the first quarter clock on a 12-play, 60-yard drive that was capped off by an Alex Martinez 1-yard touchdown run.

The first big play of the game for the Trojans came on JCN’s first possession, as senior Cuttar Huss picked off his third pass of the season setting up the Troy offense well into Charger territory.

Troy wasted no time cashing in on the turnover, as Conner McNorton ran it in from four yards out for the Trojans second score of the game with Huss connecting with Tyler Franken on a halfback pass for the two-point conversion to make it quickly 15-0, Troy.

After Huss intercepted his second pass of the game on JCN’s next drive, the Charger defense came up big forcing a three-and-out. Brayden Summers then made a big play for JCN returning the ensuing punt 30 yards. The Chargers capitalized as quarterback Boston Lane scored on a 3-yard run to cut the Troy lead to 15-6.

The next big play of the game went to the Trojans as a high snap sailed over JCN punter Joel Abel's head setting up Troy inside the Chargers’ 10-yard-line with just under five minutes to play in the half.

Troy made JCN pay once again, as three plays later Troy quarterback Reid Greaser connected with Huss for a 15-yard touchdown pass giving the Trojans a 22-6 lead at the break.

Alex Martinez got the scoring going once again for the Trojans to start the second connecting on a 22-yard field goal, and Greaser threw two more touchdown passes to put the game away. The first score came on a 49-yard pitch and catch to Huss, while Greaser also connected with Brody Winder on a 46-yard touchdown pass.

The lone JCN score came on a 42-yard touchdown pass from Lane to Summers late in the fourth quarter.

Troy quarterback Reid Greaser finished the game 12 of 13 passing for 194 yards and three touchdowns, while Cuttar Huss caught five passes for 87 yards and two scores. Brody Winder also hauled in three receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown, while Alex Martinez rushed 14 times for 46 yards and a score.

In the loss Boston Lane and Samuel Larson each ran for 75 yards, while Lane finished the game 7 of 14 through air for 64 yards and one touchdown.

Troy (8-0) now has a league title and district title in 2016, and wraps up the regular season next Friday night hosting Horton (1-7). Jefferson County North (7-1) can wrap up a playoff spot next week on the road at McLouth (4-4).
