Marysville, Perry Lecompton & Sabetha Girls Tennis Players Compete at 3-2-1A State

The first State competition for high school sports for the 2016-17 school year wrapped up over the as the girls tennis State competition took place. Marysville, Perry Lecompton and Sabetha represented the area at the 3-2-1A State tournament in Wichita at Riverside Tennis Complex. 

Marysville Bulldogs led the performances at State as Shelby Downard earned a sixth place finish in Singles action. After a first round bye Downard suffered a 1-6, 1-6 loss in her first match falling to the elimination bracket where she rattled off four straight wins 9-2, 9-1, 9-2, 9-6 to make the fifth place match where she finished the day with a 4-9 loss to take sixth place going 4-2 at State. Also in Singles play at State for Marysville was Megan Hill who went 0-2 in action.

In Doubles play at State the duo of Holly Holthaus and Haley Bruna for Marysville earned an eighth place finish at State. Holthaus and Bruna won their first match 2-6, 6-2, (10-5), but in the second round took a loss 6-0, 6-0 falling to the elimination bracket where they notched three straight wins 9-3, 9-8 (7-2) and 9-5 to assure themselves a medal the duo then fell 7-9 and went into the seventh place match but ended the day on a 6-9 loss to go 4-3 and place eighth. The tandem of Sarah Roberts and Avery Williams went 0-2 for the Bulldogs at State in Doubles. 

Perry Lecompton was led by their Doubles team of Harleigh Robertson and Gracie Folks who went 2-2 at State. Robertson and Folks won their first match of the day 6-2, 6-4, but lost in the second round and then in the elimination bracket picked up one win before falling to Marysville's duo of Holthaus and Bruna. Both Lia Jones and Samantha Worthington were in action for Perry Lecompton at State in Singles action and each went 0-2 at the State tournament. 

The Sabetha tandem of Savanna Metzger and Laura Edelman posted a 0-2 performance at the 3-2-1A State tournament in Doubles play.
