For the second straight year and third time in last four years the East squad claimed victory at the annual Kansas Shrine Bowl with the East team winning 48-37 over the West in Emporia in the 43rd edition of the Shrine Bowl. Four area players and one coach help the East team earn the win with another area player suiting up for the West.

The East took the early lead and ultimately finished the game strong to secure the win. A Tucker Horak (Rossville) 33-yard run for a score got the East on the board first and Mike McCoy (Topeka) punched it from one-yard out for the East to lead by two scores. Carson Becker 9Rock Creek) returned an interception 40-yards for another East score and they led 19-0 in the first quarter. West responded with a pair of scores before the first quarter was over as Raye Wilson (Junction City) scored on a four-yard run, while Brady Rust (Derby) hit Harley Hazlett (Abilene) with a 30-yard pass the second West touchdown making it 19-13 after just one quarter.

Both teams added a touchdown before halftime as Ian Rudzik (Ulysses) caught a 23-yard pass for a touchdown from Trey Teeter (Holcomb) for the West and McCoy scored his second rushing touchdown this one from one-yard for the East. The East led 26-20 at the half.

After a scoreless third quarter the East had McCoy rush for this third touchdown of the game followed by a Brooks Peavler (Hayden) 25-yard fumble recovery run back for a score. The West looked to answer as Rust hit Wilson for a 61-yard strike to score, but McCoy punched in another for the East for his fourth score ultimately pushing the East to the 48-37 win.

Four area players helping the East team claim the win were Chris Winkel of Troy, Winston Meyer of Nemaha Central, Jarrett Roy of Royal Valley and Mason Barta of Holton. Winkel finished with one catch for five yards, while Barta notched five tackles on defense. Konner Penning of Washington County suited up for the West and recorded five tackles and had one punt for 37 yards. Wykeen Gill of Atchison was also selected to the Shrine Bowl for the East team but did not play in the contest.

The East saw McCoy of Topkea earn Most Outstanding Player for their team, while Rudzik of Ulyssess picked up the honor on the West team.

The 43rd edition of the Kansas Shrine Bowl wrapped up with several records being broken as the two teams combined for 75 points the most in a Shrine Bowl game breaking the previous record of 73 from 2010 and 1991. While the East score the most points by a single team in a Shrine Bowl game with 45 and McCoy tied a Shrine Bowl record with four touchdowns.
