Many Northeast Kansas League legion baseball teams were looking to wrap up the regular season on Thursday night but most of them saw their planned games wasted out by Mother Nature, as the Atchison versus Sabetha double header was the only games to take place on Thursday.

The non-league double headers for Corning and Silver Lake, at Marysville and versus Rock Creek were both rained out, while the NEKL Championship game between Seneca and Doniphan County was a wash out for the second straight night. With Zone tournament on the horizon starting Sunday both Seneca and Doniphan County agree that the next time they play would be for the NEKL title; given that they play each other again which would take place in the postseason.

In the game action that did take place Sabetha picked up a road sweep of Atchison winning 13-4 in five innings and 10-4.

The legion season continues on Saturday for Silver Lake as they play Falls City in a non-League double header, then the Zone tournaments start on Sunday. The AA Zone at Sabetha is slated to start Sunday, July 17th and the AAA Zone at Ottawa will start Monday, July 18th.

Sabetha Ends Regular Season With Road Sweep of Atchison

Sabetha closed out the regular season with a pair of road wins over Atchison notching a 13-4 five inning win and 10-4.

Using an eight run fifth inning Sabetha broke open game one and went on to snag the 13-4 win in five innings. Sabetha led 5-3 until the fifth and as they partnered four hits, five walks and two hit batters to score the eight runs in the fifth to take a commanding lead. Leading the offense Brett Stallbaumer had three hits and two runs scored, while Riley Hermann had two hits and two RBI's. Trevor Kramer earned the win on the mound tossing the first four innings. Atchison in the loss was led by Logan Wahwahsuck who had a pair of hits.

Game two saw Sabetha take the lead early with four runs in the first inning, but Atchison did cut into the lead making it 4-2 in the third using a pair of hits and three walks. Sabetha answered with three runs in the top of the fourth taking advantage of a pair of Atchison errors. Joe Gruber was strong on the mound earning the win for Sabetha going six innings giving up three runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out 11. Preston Bruning led the Sabetha offense with three hits of the team’s six hits, while Hermann and Brandon Brownlee each scored three runs.

The wins push Sabetha to 24-13 on the season, while Atchison falls to 12-14 on the year. Both teams now turn their attention to Zone tournament play starting Sunday for Sabetha and Monday for Atchison.
