The legion baseball regular season has now hit its final stretch after the action from this past weekend with plenty of League play and some non-league contests.

Back on Friday, Silver Lake hosted Corning in NEKL play and earned the sweep at home winning 11-3 and 7-1.

On Sunday seven of the eight NEKL teams were in action with three League double headers and one team in non-league action. In League play Doniphan County swept Corning 10-0 and 17-5 in four innings in both contests, while Sabetha picked up two wins over Oskaloosa 15-14 (game one was actually 14-10 Oskaloosa win, but Oskaloosa played with ineligible player giving Sabetha the win - agreed upon before game) and 12-4 in five innings. Silver Lake traveled to Atchison and the teams split their League twinbill as Silver Lake won game one 7-3, while Atchison won game two 8-7 in 8 innings. In non-league action, Marysville took a pair against Seneca winning 3-2 and 8-7.

The legion baseball regular season action continues Tuesday night as Doniphan County takes on Hickman Norris (NE) in Falls City, while Seneca will be in action at Oskaloosa for a League double header.

Silver Lake Takes Two Against Corning

League play continued the season for Silver Lake and Corning on Friday night as Silver Lake played host for the League double header and earned the sweep winning 11-3 and 7-1.

Corning took the early lead in game one plating a run in the first on an RBI groundout from Dalton Boeckman scoring Braden Deters who led off the inning with a double. It was 3-0 Corning after taking advantage of two Silver Lake errors in the top of the second, but Silver Lake broke through in the bottom of the second scoring a run and then another in the third. Corning still held the 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth but Silver Lake with two walks, two hits and an error plated three to snag the lead. Five hits and two walks in the bottom of the sixth finished the game via run-rule for Silver Lake as they scored six runs to win 11-3.

Garrett Huske earned the win on the mound for Silver Lake tossing six innings giving up three runs on five hits with five strikeouts, while a two-hit game by Reid Walker, Justin Keller and Jake Lindstrom led the offense. Jackson Glessner took the loss for Corning in five and one-third innings, while Dustin Talley was 2-3 at the plate in the loss.

In game two the first four innings produce at least one run for Silver Lake getting two in the first, one in the second and third and two more in the fourth to lead 6-0, before Corning got on the board in the top of the 5th. Silver Lake added another run in the sixth and went on to secure the 7-1 win and earn the sweep. Lindstrom earned the win on the mound going six innings giving up just one run on two hits, four walks and recorded seven strikeouts. Wyatt Heiman led the offense going 3-4 for Silver Lake, while Huske and Josh Boyd each had two hits. Corning managed only three hits as Boeckman, Brice Koch and Noah Klingler each had a hit.

Doniphan County Sweep Corning in Pair of Four Inning Games

Taking advantage of strong early leads Doniphan County cruised to a pair of four inning wins at home against Corning on Sunday, winning 10-0 and 17-5.

Four-straight hits to start the bottom of the first and eight hits plus a walk in the whole inning scored six runs for Doniphan County to establish a 6-0 lead for them after just the first. Doniphan County added a run in the second and three more in the third on three hits and a walk with an RBI double by Nathan Gaarder highlighting the inning, leading to the 10-0 four inning win. Gaarder paced Doniphan County going 2-3 with a double, two RBI's and a run scored, while earning the win on the mound going all four innings giving up zero runs on two hits and a walk. Doniphan County out-hit Corning 14-2 in the contest and Wil Smith, Brody Winder, Luke Smith and Wyatt Huss joined Gaarder with two hits in the win. Corning in the loss bad only three base runners with Braden Deters and Dalton Boeckman each recording a hit.

Doniphan County pounced on a commanding lead in the bottom of the first in game two just like game one but an even wider margin. Three walks, six hits and three Corning errors led to 11 runs for Doniphan County in the first and Doniphan added two more in the second. Collin Holthaus got Corning on the board in the third with an RBI single, but Doniphan County responded with a four-run bottom of the third which included a Tucker Morris two-run homer. Corning tried to extend the game getting four runs in the top of the fourth with four hits and two errors but fell short as Doniphan County secured the 17-5 four inning win. Wyatt Huss tossed the first three innings for the win and went 2-3 with a double, triple and three RBI's, while Cuttar Huss finished the contest 3-3 with three runs scored and Doniphan County out-hit Corning 15-5. Corning got their five hits from Deters, Holthaus, Colton Buessing, Sean Rempe and Adam Kuckelman.

The wins push Doniphan County to 26-2 on the season and 16-2 in League play, while Corning fell to 4-19 on the year and 3-17 in League play.

Doniphan County continues their season on Tuesday against one of the top teams in Nebraska in Hickman Norris; game will played in Falls City and then Doniphan hosts Seneca on Wednesday at 7:00pm for the NEKL Championship (game will be broadcasted on 103.9 KNZA & 92.1 KMZA). Corning continues their season Thursday at Marysville in a double header.

Marysville Hands Seneca Pair of Tough Losses

Stepping out of League play Seneca travelled to Marysville on Sunday for a twinbill against a team that made the AA State tournament last year and it was Marysville getting the better of Seneca in each game. Marysville picked up the sweep with 3-2 and 8-7 victories.

Marysville snagged the early lead in game one as a guy reached on an error in the second and scored on a two-out RBI single by Jacob Stryker making 1-0 Marysville early. Seneca loaded the bases in the third with three walks, but left them loaded and Marysville made it 3-0 in the bottom of the third with two runs on three walks and two singles. An RBI single by Paul Enneking got Seneca on the board in the fourth, but that proved to be the only hit for Seneca in the game, as Seneca did get another run in the fifth scoring a runner that drew a walk on a RBI groundout. Seneca was sent down in order in the sixth and seventh to finish the game 3-2 in Marysville's favor.

Stryker earned the win for Marysville going seven innings giving up two runs on one hit, six walks with nine strikeouts, while going 2-3 at the plate. Dalton Hiltibrand took the loss for Seneca tossing six innings giving up four runs on five hits, three walks and four strikeouts.

Seneca using three walks and an error took the early 2-0 lead in game two in the second inning. Marysville got on the board with a run in the third, but Trenton Henry had an RBI single in the top of the fourth and another run in the fifth made it 4-1 Seneca. Marysville took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with five runs on four walks, a single and error and led 6-4 until Seneca responded with a three run sixth to regain the lead. In the bottom of the seventh Marysville started their comeback again with a pair of singles with an out between them and then an error tied the game at 7-7. A fly ball out to first base made it two-outs in the bottom of the seventh and Derek Roever pushed the game to the win column for Marysville with a two-out RBI single to give Marysville the 8-7 win.

Jacob Latta went seven innings giving up seven runs (two earned) on two hits, four walks and six strikeouts, while Roever led the offense going 3-3 with the walk-off RBI single. Seneca had Cody Rottinghaus go five innings giving up six runs on two hits, six walks with seven strikeouts, while Derek Uphaus pitched the final inning and one-third and took the loss. Trenton Henry and Chase Kramer each went 2-3 for Seneca in the loss.

The losses push Seneca to 18-6 on the season. Seneca will look too respond from the losses when they travel to Oskaloosa for a League double header on Tuesday.

Sabetha Gets Pair of Wins Against Oskaloosa

Sabetha welcomed Oskaloosa to town on Sunday for League action and ended the night with two more wins on the year, 15-14 and 12-4 in five innings.

Oskaloosa did not have enough players to field a full team, so both teams came to an agreement that an agreed upon player could play but Oskaloosa would forfeit the wins and the teams would just play two games on the night with Sabetha earning each win no matter each outcome in the games played.

Game one saw Sabetha up 4-1 early but Oskaloosa scored 10 unearned runs in the third, despite only one error in the inning but Sabetha. The big third proved to be too much for Sabetha falling 14-10 in the game played but still earned the win via the earlier ruling in the night. Mitchell Sullivan, Hunter Reed and Jarrod Miller each had three hits for Oskaloosa, as they had 16-hits as a team.

In game two Sabetha picked up the 12-4 win in five innings as Dustin Gruber pitched all five frames to earn the win, while Preston Bruning led the Sabetha offense with two hits, two runs scored and four RBI's and Kaid Allen hit his fourth home run.

The two wins for Sabetha moves them to 22-13 on the season and 11-7 in League play, while Oskaloosa moves to 9-19 overall and 6-12 in League play. Oskaloosa continues their season on Tuesday when they host Seneca in a League double header, while Sabetha will be in action again on Thursday at Atchison in a non-league double header.
