Season Comes to an End at AA State Legion Baseball for Donihphan County with Loss to Iola

After falling in a tough one run to Hays on Thursday, Doniphan County moved to the elimination side of the bracket of the AA State legion baseball tournament in Colby and started day three of the tournament off with a matchup against Iola and ultimately saw their season come to an end with a 9-1 loss in six innings. 

Iola jumped to the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning getting the leadoff man on got a two-out hit to take a 1-0 lead. Doniphan County answered in the bottom of the first tying the ballgame at 1-1 after Tucker Morris delivered a two-out RBI single to score Reid Greaser. After the first inning the game was totally different for both offenses as Iola went on to score three runs in the second, a run in the third and two more in the fifth and sixth innings and Doniphan County only six more base runners in the game after the first inning.

Trying to slow down Iola, Doniphan County used three different pitchers in the contest with starter Cooper Leach taking the loss, while the Iola pitcher, Kason Siemens pitched six innings gave up one run on eight hits and one walk and struck out four. Jeffrey Watts and Chris Winkel led the Doniphan County offense with 2-3 games and Winkel earned McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on KNZA radio, while Phoenix Keller was 1-2 with a double and walk and Morris finished 1-3 with an RBI.

The loss ended Doniphan County's run at the AA State legion baseball tournament with a 1-2 record at State, beating Larned 6-0 in the opening round, falling 3-2 to Hays and then losing 9-1 to Iola. Doniphan County wraps up the season with a 29-5 record overall.
