Seneca and Doniphan County Open Zone Play at Sabetha With Wins

One Class AA State tournament stop is up for grabs between four Northeast Kansas League teams in the Zone tournament at Somerset Park in Sabetha and the action got underway on Tuesday night with Seneca and Doniphan County picking up wins. Seneca nabbed the 4-0 win over Hiawatha and Doniphan County won 9-0 in five innings over Sabetha.

The night started off with a pitcher's duel between Seneca's, Alex Rottinghaus and Hiawatha's, Taylor Jacobsen and while both players pitched well it was Seneca that took advantage of their few opportunities to gain the 4-0 win. Hiawatha looked primed to take the early lead as a pair of singles followed by walk loaded the bases with no one out in the second, but Hiawatha stranded all three as Alex Rottinghaus struck out the next two batters and got a pop-out to second for the third out of the inning to keep the game scoreless. In the top of the third Seneca took the lead on a RBI single by Devin Henry and held the 1-0 lead going into the top of the seventh and were looking for insurance runs. Behind a pair of RBI doubles by Henry and Rottinghaus, Seneca plated three and held a 4-0 lead and finished the game off for the win.

Rottinghaus pitched all seven innings for the win giving just three hits and two walks with six strikeouts, while going 2-4 at the plate with a double and RBI to earn McDonald's "Player of the Game" on Kanzaland radio. Henry added a 2-4 performance also for Seneca in the win, while Jacobsen was the tough luck loser pitching a strong seven innings giving up four runs on seven hits, two walks and struck out two.

Seneca is now 26-5 on the season with the win, while Hiawatha fell to 9-18 on the year.

In the nightcap it was all Doniphan County early with an early outburst off offense that Sabetha was not able to overcome. Doniphan County pounced on Sabetha starter Bryce Kramer in the bottom of the first getting six runs, including a grand slam from Phoenix Keller. Three more runs were added by Doniphan County in the second as Keller blasted a two-run homer in the inning making 9-0 after two frames. Cooper Leach shut down Sabetha throughout the game pitching all five innings giving up just one hit and four walks with six strikeouts to earn the win, while Keller's 2-2 performance with a grand slam, two-run homer, six RBI's, two runs scored and a walk earned him McDonald's "Player of the Game" on Kanzaland radio. Reid Greaser added a 2-2 game for Doniphan County in the win, while Tyler Ulrich registered the lone hit for Sabetha in the contest.

Doniphan County with the win improved to 26-3 on the season, while Sabetha fell to 10-27 on the year.

The action continues at Somerset Park on Wednesday night as Sabetha and Hiawatha will meet up at 6:00pm in an elimination game, followed by Seneca versus Doniphan County in the winner's bracket.

Atchison added three more runs in the fifth of a pair of hits, walk and two groundouts making it 5-1. Oskaloosa tried to get back into the game but stranded two runners in the sixth and scored a run in the seventh but were held to just that one run falling short in the end.
