The Atchison County Historical Society Museum is set to honor Atchison County’s newest inductee into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. Matthew “Chic” Downing is scheduled to be honored on Thursday July 23, 2015 beginning at 6 pm.

Downing was a member of the Benedictine Ravens from 1968 through 1972 playing both for St. Benedict's College and then Benedictine College after St. Benedict's merged with Mount St. Scholastica College in 1971.

After his playing career at Benedictine was over, Downing became the head boys basketball coach at his alma mater, Atchison High.  He served in that role until 1992, and guided the Redmen to four state championships and 10 state tournament appearances.

Friends, family, former players and opponents are encouraged to attend and help honor one of Atchison’s greatest.
