Several Local Kansas Girls Compete With the Lady Prospects in Cincinnati

The Lady Prospects 17U Red team embarked on a week long excursion to Cincinnati, OH and Indianapolis, IN to participate in two July live period girls basketball tournament. The group composed of Faith Brintle(Council Grove), A’Kia Fain(Junction City), Erica Gartner(Labette County), Kate Hanson(Royal Valley), Avery Lewman(Maur Hill-Mount Academy), Dakota McQueen(Wetmore), Kendall Michalski(Washburn Rural), Madelyn Moya(Lansing), Carrington Ream(Metro Academy), Jordan Schoenberger(Chanute) and Taryn Schuette(Sabetha) began their tournament run in Cincinnati, OH at the USJN Premier Invitational Midwest.

During the tournament, the ladies went 4-2 and played teams from Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio and Iowa during the four days. In the semifinals of bracket play, they lose a heartbreaker to Team Iowa, after Carrington Ream hit two free throws to tie the game at 41 with ten seconds left to play. On the ensuing inbound, Team Iowa pushed the ball down the court and attempted a contested layup, but with two seconds left, rebounded the miss and put it back in at the buzzer to win 43-41.

With no break, the ladies headed over to Indianapolis, IN to participate in the USJN Indy 100 event. The ladies had to play three games the next day, going 3-0 to win their pool. In the semifinals, the ladies beat a scrappy North Iowa Fire team to advance to the championship game.

In the championship game, the ladies faced Chicago Hoops Express, who is loaded with D1 talent. The ladies struggled with the athleticism and started off a little slow. After being down by 18pts in the 2nd half, the ladies fought back to cut the lead to 7pts. But in the end, CHE proved to be too much and defeated the Lady Prospects 57-48.

Over the course of the week, the ladies played in front of nearly 300+ coaches between the two events. They’ll be in action in Kansas City, July 24th, then will head over to Denver for an event, July 27-29.
