Doniphan County Wins Own Legion Tournament

The Doniphan County junior and senior legion baseball teams both captured their home tournament championship trophies on Saturday night in Wathena.  The DC junior’s run-ruled Falls City to improve to 10-1 on the season.  The seniors also beat Falls City 10-0 in four innings and improved to 9-2 on the year, while staying undefeated on their home field.    

Jeffrey Watts tossed the chamionship game shutout victory while Nathan Gaarder was 2-2 with a walk and had 5 RBI, including a three-run home run.  Alex Schmille added a pair of hits and RBI.  Doniphan County host Auburn, Nebraska on Sunday before Seneca plays in Wathena on Wednesday in a regular season twin-bill that will also decide the NEK League Tournament Champion. (6:00pm game will be for the NEKL Tournament title & will be broadcasted on 103.9 KNZA & 92.1 KMZA)

Both Atchison teams placed third in the Doniphan County Tournament as the Atchison juniors beat McLouth 13-5 and the senior A's topped Silver Lake 11-3. The senior A's held just a 3-2 lead going into the fifth, when they double up their score to take a 6-2 advantage and finished the game off in the sixth with a five-run frame for the win. Chase Belher went all six innings striking out 10 in the win as Atchison took advantage of errors in the contest by Silver Lake to aide their offense and snap a six-game losing streak.
