Hiawatha Sweeps Frankfort to Earn First League Wins of the Season

Solid pitching and capitalizing on their opportunities that is what Hiawatha did on Wednesday night at Noble Park as they topped Frankfort 7-5 and 13-2 in four innings for the double header sweep.

Frankfort took the early lead in game one as a leadoff walk drawn by Wyatt VanDorn pay dividends when Hiawatha had an error in left field and it allowed VanDorn to score making it 1-0. Frankfort worked to a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth when Hiawatha batted around and used four hits and a pair of hit batters to plate five runs and take the lead. Frankfort got one back in the sixth, but Hiawatha added another run themselves in the bottom of the frame and Dakota Bayles in relief of Taylor Jacobsen struck out the side to end the game, as Frankfort strand two in the top of the seventh, giving Hiawatha the 7-5 win. Bayles also got a big out for Hiawatha in the top of the sixth, the final out of the inning which was recorded on a spectacular diving catch by Brendan Steele in centerfield.

Jacobsen earned the win on the mound going five and two-thirds giving up five runs on seven hits, three walks and struck out four; none of the five runs were earned against Jacobsen. Taylor also was 1-2 with an RBI and run scored to earn McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on Kanzaland radio. Bayles pitched the final inning and one-third for the save and was 2-4 with a double, triple and two runs scored.
Lucas Adams and Wyatt VanDorn led Frankfort in the loss, as Adams was 2-4 with a run scored and VanDorn finished 2-3 with a double, two RBI, run scored and walk.

In game two Frankfort took the early lead after a RBI double by Adams scored VanDorn and a Hiawatha error scored Adams, making it 2-0 going into the bottom of the first. In the bottom of the first Frankfort struggle pitching and Hiawatha took advantage to score nine runs with the offense highlighted by a three-run homer from Bayles. Shawn Green shut down Frankfort the rest of the way pitching four innings for the win giving up two runs on one hit, five walks and two strikeouts, while going 2-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and a double to help Hiawatha win 13-2 in four innings. Game two proved to be a pitching duel between Bryce Stottlemire and Jeffrey Watts and Oskaloosa went on to get the 1-0 win. The bottom of the fourth is when the lone run came as Zach Whaley singled with two-outs for Oskaloosa, moved to second on a wild pitch and with two outs Jared Miller hit a sharp grounder between first and second that resulted in a Doniphan County error and Whaley scored to give Oskaloosa the only run they would need for the 1-0 win.
