Three Northeast Kansas League legion baseball teams hit the diamond on Tuesday night as Sabetha hosted Atchison for a League twin bill and Oskaloosa took on Ozawkie for a non-league double header. Sabetha earned their first NEKL wins of the season sweeping Atchison at Somerset park with a 10-0 four inning win in game one and 4-3 win in game two on a walk-off. Oskaloosa lost a pair on the road to Ozawkie in non-league action falling 12-1 and 8-6.

Sabetha Earns First League Wins of the Season with Sweep of Atchison

It was a early offensive output in game one and walk-off fashion in game two that earned Sabetha a pair of wins at home on Tuesday night against Atchison, as they won 10-0 in four innings and 4-3.

Game one started off with Jake Meyer dialed in on the mound in the top of the first for Sabetha retiring the side in order on seven pitches, while the in bottom of the first Sabetha's offense busted out for 10 runs. Sabetha got to Atchison starter Quentan Riechart with four hits and a walk, before Atchison switched to Harry Trotter on the mound but Sabetha kept the offense rolling posting eight hits and 10 runs in the inning. The scoring started with a two RBI double by Dustin Boeckman, who later added a RBI triple in the inning, also for Sabetha. Kaid Allen and Garrett Spellmeier each notched RBI doubles in the 10-run first, also. Meyer continued to stymie Atchison at the plate and finished the contest pitching all four frames giving up just two hits and striking out three on 49 pitches to earn the shutout win and McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on KNZA radio.

Boeckman led the Sabetha offense with his 2-2 game with a double, triple, two runs scored and three RBI, while Blake Popkess and Adam Herl each posted a two-hit game with an RBI and two runs scored each. Atchison got their lone two hits from Lane Fry and Jake Schmidt, while they only had four base runners in the contest (other two via errors).

Atchison took the early lead in game two as Riechart laced a ball into play for a two RBI single in the top of the second after Atchison led the inning off with a double and walk, making it 2-0. The lead was cut in half in the bottom of the third as Sabetha tallied a run on a Boeckman RBI double, but in the top of the fifth Atchison added one as Harry Trotter made it 3-1 off his RBI single. Down to their final three outs in the bottom of the fifth, Sabetha drew a leadoff walk but two fly outs meant Sabetha would have to do everything with two outs. Boeckman notched his four extra base hit of the night with another double then a walk loaded the bases and Atchison made a switch on the mound, but a balk brought in a run making it 3-2 and then Kaid Allen put the ball in play for a two RBI walk-off single to give Sabetha the 4-3 win.

It was Boeckman again leading the Sabetha offense going 2-3 with two doubles, an RBI and run scored, while Allen, Popkess and Herl were the only other Sabetha guys to register hits in the game. Preston Bruning got his first start on the mound and got the no decision going four and one-third giving up two runs on three hits, two walks and struck out three; Dustin Gruber got the final two outs in the top of the fifth. Atchison got solid four and two-thirds from James Boatwright but all four runs went on his final line as he gave up four hits, five walks and struck out five taking the loss. Offensively, Chase Behler, Marcus Denton, Riechart, Tyler Harris and Trotter each posted a hit in the contest.

With the wins Sabetha improved to 4-11 on the season and 2-4 in League action, while Atchison fell to 3-5 on the year and 2-4 in League play, now having lost their last five games. Both teams are back in action on Thursday as Sabetha hosts Silver Lake in non-league play for a double header at Somerset Park starting at 6:00pm and Atchison takes on Doniphan County in the Doniphan County Tournament at 8:15pm (junior legion before).
