Jefferson County North Chargers Sweep NEKL Track Crowns

The start gun fired off and away the nine Northeast Kansas League teams went in track and field action competing for the League title.

At the end of the day it was the Jefferson County North Chargers girls and boys teams both claiming the NEKL titles. The lady Chargers behind four first place finishes and 123 total points took first place, while Maur Hill-Mount Academy finished second and Pleasant Ridge took third. Jackson Heights and Oskaloosa girls rounded out the Top five, taking fourth and fifth, while Valley Falls finished sixth, McLouth seventh, Immaculata eighth and Horton ninth.

The boys finish was a bit closer for the League title as the JCN Chargers used 111 points to claim the crown, while Pleasant Ridge took second and Jackson Heights finished just one-point behind the Rams for third place. Oskaloosa and Maur Hill boys rounded out the Top five, taking fourth and fifth, while McLouth finished sixth, Horton seventh, Valley Falls eighth and Immaculata ninth.

Eight first place finishes helped lead the way for the JCN Chargers to win the NEKL track titles and five of the eight came in field events. On the girls side of action Ravyn Jobbins, Kaylee Page and Gabbi George won the javelin (103'06), pole vault (8'06) and shot put (33'10.50), respectively, while for the boys Joel Abel and Ridge Robertson each won a field event, claiming gold in the high jump (5'06) and pole vault (10'06). The other three first place Charger finish came on the track by Carissa McAfee, Brayden Summers and Cole Bryant who won the girls 3200 meter run (12:56), boys 3200 meter run (10:56) and the boy’s 400 meter dash (53.14), respectively.

Kaitlynn Little led the Jackson Heights Cobras at the NEKL meet as she won both the 800 and 1600 mete runs behind times of 2:32 and 5:49. While in the boys action the Cobras struck for the gold in the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays with times of 3:35 and 8:59.94. Seth Holliday and Wyatt Olberding also brought home gold for the Cobras by winning the 800 meter run (2:07) and triple jump (41'07.50), respectively. Olerding's mark in the triple jump set a new NEKL meet record.

Pleasant Ridge like Jackson Heights had six first place finishes on the day and it was Grace McKinney leading the way as she sprinted to wins in the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 12.67 and 26.56, while Bridget Howard won the triple jump (31'06) and the Rams girls 4x100 meter relay team took first also behind a time of 52.96. On the boy’s side of action, Matt Smith won the 100 meter dash for Pleasant Ridge with a time of 11.38 and the Rams also won the 4x100 meter relay (44.94).

Highlighting the day for the Oskaloosa Bears was a multi-event winner in CJ Kilgo as she won the 300 meter hurdles (51.05) and the long jump (15'01), while Madison Miller picked up the gold in the girls discus (99'07). The boys were led by Dillon Grother and Tommy Molder who won the 110 meter hurdles (16.93) and 200 meter dash (22.99), respectively.

A pair of victories in the relays led the Maur Hill girls as they won the 4x400 (4:20) and 4x800 (10:38) meter relays, while Avery Lewman grabbed first place in the girls 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01. Jack Seibert picked up the lone gold for the Maur Hill boys as he won the 3200 meter run behind a time of 10:56.

Both Horton and McLouth had three first place finishes on the day at the League meet on Thursday. Horton was led by Trey Dishon as he tossed his way to wins in the discus (144'05) and shot put (50'01), while Derrick Stone won the javelin (145'10). For McLouth it was Jack Arnett, Remington Courter and Anna Moore each winning an event. Arnett took first in the boy’s 300 meter hurdles (42.63), Courter won the boys long jump (19'00) and Moore placed first in the girl’s 100 meter hurdles (15.69).

Valley Falls had one winner on the day as Tamara Drinkard won the girls high jump by posting a leap of 4'10.
