NEKL All-League Basketball Honors Announced

It was a solid year of competition in the Northeast Kansas League on the basketball court and it saw a pair of teams make the State tournament in Class 2A and one come home with a fourth place finish.

This was the first year of full round robin League action in the NEKL and the lady Dragons of Valley Falls made light work of the competition winning the NEKL by going 16-0 in League action and finishing the year 22-4, placing fourth at State in 2A. Leading the charge for the Dragons was junior, Ali Brown and freshman, Rachel Frakes who both earned first team All-NEKL. While junior, Callie Watson registered second team honors and junior, Jenna Kramer earned honorable mention.

Maur Hill-Mount Academy brought home a second place finish in the NEKL finishing the season 16-5 overall and was led by junior, Avery Lewman who earned first team All-NEKL honors, while senior, Kendra Brull got the honorable mention nod. Pleasant Ridge took third place in the League finishing 16-6 on the season and was led by a pair of seniors in Holly Ewert and Kelsey Carpenter who earned first and second team All-NEKL honors, respectively. Ram senior, Carly Simonis earned honorable mention All-NEKL, also.

The rest of the girls standings in the NEKL shook out with Jackson Heights placing fourth, while Jefferson County North, Immaculata and Horton tied for fifth and both McLouth and Oskaloosa tied for eighth.

Senior, Jessica Keehn led the Jackson Heights Cobras on the year and earned first team All-NEKL, while junior Becca Gibson notched honorable mention honors. For JCN sophomore, Jentry Seichepine earned second team honors, while freshman, Anabelle Vaught picked up honorable mention All-NEKL. Horton senior, Kelly Lehew was the only lady Charger to earn All-NEKL, earning honorable mention, while Immaculata senior, Grace Parker picked up second team honors and senior, Ellie Wolk earned honorable mention. McLouth senior, Meghan Jackson was named to second team and Oskaloosa junior, Maddy Miller picked up honorable mention honors.

The boys NEKL title was shared by Jackson Heights and Maur Hill-Mount Academy who split the season series each finishing 15-1 in League action. The Cobras capped off their year with a 21-3 record and made the 2A State tournament and were led by potent scorer, junior, Zane Richter who earned first team All-NEKL, while sophomore, Wyatt Olberding picked up second team honors and senior, Korby Strube registered honorable mention.

For Maur Hill a pair of seniors in Tobin Kocour and Dillon Kramer were both named All-NEKL first team, while fellow senior, Cole Siebenmorgan earned honorable mention.

Jefferson County North Chargers took home third place in the NEKL standings finishing the year 14-8 and were led by junior, Bryce Noll who picked up first team All-NEKL honors, while senior, Shawn Lane got the honorable mention nod.

Valley Falls, Horton, McLouth, Oskaloosa finished fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively in the League while Immaculata and Pleasant Ridge tied for eighth in the League.

Dragon's senior, Grant Haag picked up second team All-NEKL honors, while junior Marty Gatzemeyer earned honorable mention. For Horton senior, Derrick Stone led the way earning second team All-NEKL honors, while junior, Alec Cowley picked up honorable mention. McLouth senior, Nic Bair had a solid season to earn first team All-NEKL and his senior teammate, Wyatt Hermann earned honorable mention. Oskaloosa seniors, Justin Sharp and Luis Rodriguez earned second team and honorable mention All-NEKL honors, respectively. While a pair of Immaculata Raiders also earned All-NEKL honors as senior, Connor Goetz earned second team and junior, Justin Varney earned honorable mention. Pleasant Ridge senior, Tristan DeMaranville also earned honorable mention All-NEKL honors.
