24 Area Grapplers Earn Spots at State in 3-2-1A Wrestling at St. Mary's Regional - 4 Individual Champs

Twenty four area wrestlers claimed spots in the 3-2-1A State competition on Saturday by finishing in the Top four at the St. Mary's Regionals. Nine different area schools will be represented at the State competition with at least one grappler in competition after qualifying for State.

Four Individuals brought home Regional titles at St. Mary's on Saturday. Troy Trojan, Tristan Speer continued to dominate on the mats winning the 195lbs Regional title with a 4-0 day with three pinfall wins and 7-2 decision in the championship bout. McLouth Bulldog, Adam Perkins with a 3-0 record on the day, winning all his matches by pinfall took home the Regional title at 220lbs. Marysville Bulldogs, Josh Nelson (170lbs) and Scott Kleinert (285lbs) both brought home gold for Marysville winning their weight classes at Regionals to qualify for State. Nelson continued his strong season, as the number one wrestler in 3-2-1A KWCA rankings at 170lbs went 4-0 at Regionals with three pinfall wins to claim the Regional title at 170lbs. While, Kleinert had a 3-0 day with a pair of pinfall wins to claim the heavyweight division title.

While, Nelson and Kleinert led the Marysville Bulldogs performances at Regionals, three other Bulldogs qualified for State, giving them five State qualifiers as Marysville finished third as a team. Both Jacob Mintzmyer (152lbs) and Caleb Vogelsberg (195lbs) earned third place finishes after going 4-1 and 3-1 on the mats. Jacob Stryker also qualified for State for the Bulldogs going 3-2 on the mats at 145lbs to earn a fourth place finish.

ACCHS Tigers finished as a team fifth and like Marysville qualified five individuals for the State competition. Leading the way for ACCHS at Regionals was Hunter Ostertag the third ranked wrestler in the State at 120lbs, as he earned a second place finish going 2-1 in action, while Bratten Forbes (220lbs) also earned second place at Regionals going 2-1. A trio of Tigers earned fourth place finishes to make State as Karl Scholz and Jacob Handke each went 2-2 to take fourth place at 106lbs and 195lbs, respectively while Joey Landwehr also earned fourth after posting a 3-2 record at 170lbs.

The Sabetha Bluejays will be sending three grapplers to State as Jacob Leuthold (285lbs), Brandon Poe (170lbs) and Seth Harrell (113lbs) all picked up Top four finishes and helped Sabetha finish sixth as a team at Regionals. Leuthold led the Bluejay performances at Regionals taking home second place at the heavyweight division after going 2-1, while Poe placed third with a 4-1 day and Harrell took fourth after going 2-2 on the mats.

Four wrestlers qualified for State for the Onaga Buffalos as Dustin Blow (195lbs), Trenton Ross (132lbs), Kyle Ames (182lbs) and Quentin Lara (220lbs) all placed in the Top four of their weight classes, helping Onaga place eighth as a team at Regionals. Blow worked his way to the championship bout at 195lbs and took home the silver medal finishing second, going 3-1 on the day. Ross and Ames each finished third in their weight classes each posting a record of 3-1 on the mats. While, Lara finished fourth by going 3-2 at Regionals to qualify for State.

Doniphan West Mustang duo of Garret Dunlap (160lbs) and Kody Collins (182lbs) both grabbed silver medals finishing second at Regionals after both going 3-1 on the mats, qualifying for State.

Two Pleasant Ridge Rams are heading to State after Colt Evans (138lbs) and Colton Doty (285lbs) placed second and third respectively in their weight classes. Evans posted a 2-1 record on the day to take second, while Doty went 3-1 to take home third.

Riverside Cylcone, Scott Resler (132lbs) finished fourth on the day posting a 4-2 record on the day to earn that fourth place finish and qualified for State.

The 24 area State qualifiers will take to the mats at the 3-2-1A State competition next Friday and Saturday February 27th and 28th in Hays at Fort Hays State University.
