Onaga Wrestlers Take Second at Russell Round Robin

The Onaga Buffaloes, along with four other schools squared off on the mats in Russell on Saturday and Onaga came away with a second place team performance.

The Buffaloes posted 117.5 points to finish, second behind the host Russell who tallied 145 points. Plainville, Osborne and Stockton finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively to round out the team performances.

A quartet of Onaga grapplers brought home first place medals individually as Trenton Ross (126lbs), Garrett Ames (170lbs), Dustin Blow (195lbs) and Tharrin D'Aloia (106lbs) each earned first place finishes. Ross after notching a pinfall win (4:54) and a technical fall (18-2), competed in a first place match and made it a 3-0 day for himself by picking up the pinfall win 1:33, to take first. Ames went 2-0 on the day to claim first place, earning a pair of wins by decision (3-1 & 1-0), while Blow went 3-0 with three pinfall wins (1:09, 3:08 and :40). D'Aloia earned first place by default as there were no other competitors at 106lbs at the tournament.

Three more Buffaloes brought home silver medals from the Russell Round Robin on Saturday, as Dominic Buterakos (120lbs), Kylar Schmidt (145lbs) and Kyle Ames (182lbs) each placed second. Both Buterakos and Ames each went 2-1, as Dominic registered his wins by pinfall and injury, while Ames won by pinfall twice with both under a minute. Schmidt posted a 1-1 record on the day, picking up his win by pinfall (2:30).

Jonathan Fairbanks (126lbs), Kosta Buterakos (132lbs), Jeffery Chestnut (138lbs) and Brandon Merriman (120lbs) all finished with fourth place finishes for the Buffaloes. Fairbanks went 2-2 on the day, while Buterakos, Chestnut and Merriman all went 0-3.

The Buffaloes will take to the mats again on Thursday when they compete in a double dual at Mission Valley.
