2015 TVL Basketball Tournament -- Day 1 Recap

The 2015 Twin Valley League tournament got underway on Saturday and there was plenty of action on the hardwood at Onaga high school where this year’s TVL tournament is being hosted. Saturday's action is recapped below.

Girls

#9 Hanover vs. #8 Wetmore      (Wetmore won 54-52)

It was one of the first games of the day and ultimately the close final score on the day, also in the first round of the TVL tournament. Hanover and Wetmore traded buckets early and were tied at 10-10 after the first quarter, Hanover worked themselves in front at the half 27-24. The Cardinals took the lead in the third quarter but the Wildcats held the 39-38 advantage after the three quarters of play. That lead would go back to Wetmore in the fourth and they would hold on to it for the 54-52 win. The Cardinals on their way to the win hit six three-pointers, while going 18-20 from the free throw line, improving to 5-5 on the year. Wetmore in the win was led by Dakota McQueen who posted 21 points, going 13-14 from the free throw line, while McKayla Henry added 10 points and Keri Pfrang chipped in 14 points. Hanover in the loss fell to 3-6 and was led by Morganne Zabokrtsky who scored 12 points, while Paige Doebele added 11 points.

#13 Onaga vs. #4 Axtell         (Axtell won 55-22)

The Axtell Eagles utilizing a fast start took control of the game against Onaga in the opening round of the TVL Tournament and cruised to the 55-22 win. Axtell jumped out to the 15-5 lead after the first quarter and padded that lead with an 18-4 second quarter. Nine gals scored on the day for Axtell in the win as Kiersten Talbot led the way with 14 points, while Anna Buessing chipped in nine points as Axtell moved to 10-2 on the year. Onaga in the loss was led by Carley Wilhelm and Rebekah Glessner who each posted eight points, as the Buffaloes fell to 0-9 on the year.

#12 Frankfort vs. #5 Troy         (Troy won 57-33)

The Troy Trojans shot out to a 7-0 start to the contest, but Frankfort fired back to be down just 15-10 after the first quarter. In the second period things with stagnate on offense for Frankfort and Troy took advantage outscoring them 15-7 in the period to lead 30-17 at the half. That lead continued to grow in the second half for with three-point shots and free throws, as they went on to earn the 57-33 win. As a team Troy hit six three's and went 15-17 from the free throw line. Pacing the Trojans on the day was Breanna Smith who tallied 16 points, while Holly Whetstine scored 13 points and Blair Weishaar hit four three-pointers to finish with 12 points, as Troy improved to 6-3. Frankfort with the loss fell to 1-9 on the year, as Abra Shirley led the Wildcats with 17 points.

#10 Clifton-Clyde vs. #7 Linn       (Linn won 56-34)

Behind a first half that featured seven different Linn Bulldogs scoring the Bulldogs worked to a 31-12 halftime lead and cruised past Clifton-Clyde for the 56-34 victory. A trio of gals in double figures paced Linn with Kesiah Thalmann leading the charge with 15 points, while Nicole Ohlde and Rachel Bott each chipped in 10 points apiece, as Linn improved to 5-3 on the year. The loss for Clifton-Clyde sends them to 3-7 on the season as Elizabeth Nobert paced the Eagles with 14 points in the loss.

#11 Blue Valley vs. #6 Doniphan West         (Doniphan West won 58-39)

The Doniphan West Mustangs ran past Blue Valley to open the TVL tournament, as the Mustangs led 19-5 after just the first quarter and didn't look back on their way to the 58-39 win over the Rams. The Mustangs feed the post with Regan Gibson in the contest as Gibson posted 21 points, going 7-11 from the free throw line to lead Doniphan West. McKenzie Blevins added 14 points, hitting 6-11 free throws for Doniphan West as the Mustangs improved to 5-3 on the year. Blue Valley with the loss fell to 1-8 on the year and was led by Megan Plummer who posted 17 points, while Sami Pfaff scored 12 points.

Boys

#9 Frankfort vs. #8 Axtell        (Frankfort won 45-39) 

It was a rematch of the game that just happened in the regular season recently, but this time around Frankfort picked up the win avenging the 15-point loss in the regular season matchup. The Wildcats trailed Axtell 15-12 at the half, but the scoring picked up in the second half for both teams slightly and for Frankfort a little more as they picked up the 45-39 win. Jacob Studer led the charge for Frankfort as he posted 21 points, while Adam Kenworthy tallied 13 points as the Wildcats are now 4-6 on the season. Axtell with the loss fell to 6-6 on the year, as Andrew Feldkamp led the Eagles with 17 points, as Adam Kuckelman chipped in 13 points, also.

#13 Clifton-Clyde vs. #4 Doniphan West        (Doniphan West won 72-40)

A 46-point first half propelled Doniphan West to a high scoring game and the 72-40 win over Clifton-Clyde. The Mustangs led 46-24 at the half and continued to add to that lead in the second half against Clifton-Clyde as nine different Mustangs scored. Jeffery Watts led Doniphan West with 22 points, while Cooper Leach chipped in 16 points and Austin Taylor posted 12 points as the Mustangs moved to 6-2 on the season. Clifton-Clyde with the loss fell to 0-10 on the season and were led by Andrew Seifert who scored 15 points.

#12 Blue Valley vs. #5 Troy           (Troy won 86-36)

Behind four guys in double figures and a pair of 28 point quarters the Troy Trojans cruised to the 86-36 win over Blue Valley in the first round of the TVL tournament. It was a 28-5 second quarter that gave Troy the firm control of the contest on their way to improving to 7-2 on the year. Cuttar Huss paced the Trojans in the contest finishing with 14 points, while Wil Smith added 13 points and Nathan Gaarder and Collin Jasper each scored 10 points, apiece. Blue Valley with the loss fell to 1-8 on the season and was led by Chase Carey who scored 18 points, while Bradley Young chipped in nine points.

#10 Linn vs. #7 Onaga               (Onaga won 54-31) 

The Onaga boys for the first time in the past few years took to the court on the first day of the TVL tournament and earned the win, 54-31 beating Linn. The Buffaloes used a 15-6 first quarter to establish the early lead and not relinquish it on their way to the win and improving their record to 6-3 on the season. Jarod Gronewoller led Onaga with 17 points, while Mitchell Duer chipped in 13 points for the Buffaloes in the win. Linn in the loss was led by Grant Cook and Chad Gross who each scored 10 points, as Linn fell to 2-6.

#11 Wetmore vs. #6 Valley Heights              (Valley Heights won 61-50)

It proved to be a heated matchup and tight contest in the matchup the Valley Heights Mustangs were able to hold off Wetmore for the 61-50 win, in a game that was closer than the final score. Valley Heights jumped out early with an early seven points, by Elijah Smith, but Wetmore cut into the lead trailing just 15-11 after the first quarter. A 17-10 second quarter pushed the lead to 11 at the half and Valley Heights led 32-21, but that lead disappeared as Wetmore posted a 19-10 third quarter to draw within three points. The lead fell down to one multiple times in the fourth quarter but a run late by the Mustangs pushed the lead back to double figures helping them earn the win a foul fest. The Mustangs finished 21-36 from the free throw line and Anthony Edwards led the team with 19 points, while Logan Woodyard added 11 points and Smith posted 13 points. Valley Heights with the win are now 6-3, while Wetmore fell to 2-8 as Jeremy Hoelscher led the Cardinals with 18 points.
