Sabetha Leads Area Performances With Second at Home Tri-State Wrestling Tournament

On Saturday the Sabetha Bluejays hosted their annual Tri-State Wrestling Tournament with five Northeast Kansas area teams, a pair of Nebraska teams and two others competing on the mats.

Taking home the crown on the day was Wamego who dominated the points with 205.5 points to claim first place as a team, while the host Sabetha Bluejays finsihed second with 159.5 points. The Pleasant Ridge Rams were the only other team to finish with over 100 points, tallying 149 to take third place as a team. HTRS/Pawnee City grabbed fourth as a team edging out Bonner Springs by just 1.5 points, giving Bonner Springs fifth place. Auburn, Hiawatha, Atchison and Marysville finished off the team performances placing sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.

A trio of first place finishes highlighted the day for the Sabetha Bluejays at their home tournament as Seth Harrell, Brandon Poe and Kaid Allen all picked up first place finishes. Harrell posted a 3-0 mark at 113lbs, notching a pair of pinfall wins and 16-0 technical fall win, while Poe at 170lbs went 5-0 with five pinfall wins and Allen finished 4-0 on the day with two pinfalls win and wins via decision 14-7 and 4-3. The only currently ranked Sabetha Bluejay by the KWCA in 3-2-1A is Jacob Leuthold at 285lbs and he finished second on the day in his weight class going 1-1 with a pinfall win but fell via pinfall in the championship bout, while Austin Garber (160lbs) also finished second for Sabetha going 2-1 in action with two wins via pin. Kyler Krebs, also picked a second place showing after going 2-1 at 152lbs with 6-0 and 6-1 decision wins. Trei Harrell picked a bronze medal on the day at 126lbs by going 3-1 with three pinfall wins, while Brandon Brownlee (120lbs) and Nate Niehues (138lbs) each took fourth with 2-2 records on the mat for the tournament. Corbin Halls (132lbs) and Kohl Buser (182lbs) each finished fifth for the Bluejays, also.

The Pleasant Ridge Rams had a pair of individual first place finishes, while three second place finishes, three third place finishes, four fourth place showings and a sixth place finishes, also on the day. Brandon Broddle (120lbs) and Nic Bridges (145lbs) both posted 3-0 records on the day earning first place in the process. Broddle earned a pinfall win and two wins via decision, 7-4 and 5-4, while Bridges won via 3-2 and 7-5 decisions and a pinfall. Colt Evans (138lbs), Robert Mcmanigle (195lbs) and Colton Doty (220lbs) all three went 2-1 to earn second place finishes for the Rams. Evans picked up a pinfall and technical fall 16-0 win, while Mcmanigle had a pair of pinfall victories and Doty won a match via pin and the other by a 6-2 decision. Third place finishes were earned by Devin Dorr (113lbs) going 1-2, while Dustin Graham (182lbs) went 2-2 for third place and Nic Stiver (220lbs) posted a 3-1 mark to earn third place. Four Rams earned fourth place finishes including: Luke Oatney (106lbs), Nick Hyde (160lbs), Konner Walker (170lbs) and David Medley (285lbs), while Paige Vehlewauld placed fifth at 106lbs and Cobrin Meyers finished sixth at 152lbs.

HTRS/Pawnee City had plenty of Top six performers on the day and a first place performance by Ben Railsback paced the team on the day, going 3-0 at 160lbs, finishing with three pinfall victories. Jesse Hickey earned second place at 170lbs going 3-1, while Jacob Phelps earned a third place finish at 152lbs going 3-1. Three guys earned for HTRS/Pawnee City as Nicholas Zermeno (195lbs), Eli Cline (182lbs) and Jacob Railsback (152lbs) all picked up fourth place finishes, while Dalton Rohrs (220lbs), John Bruns (170lbs) and Jordan Wilhelm (120lbs) all earned fifth place and Jordan Watson (132lbs) and Kaje Faulks (285lbs) placed sixth.

For the Auburn Bulldogs they were paced by a pair of first place finishers on the day as Johnny Gill and Nate Moran each earned first place. Gill posted a 3-0 record with two pinfall wins and a major decision 9-1 win the championship bout at 152lbs, while Moran went 2-0 at 220lbs with two pin victories to claim first place. Brandin Clarke earned second place with a 2-1 record at 126lbs for Auburn.

Hiawatha was led by a pair of third place performances as Joey Simpson (285lbs) posted a 3-1 record with three pinfall wins and Damon Barnfield also finished third at 106lbs. Spencer Welch (145lbs) posted a 2-2 record to claim fourth place and Keenan Hinton (220lbs) also nabbed fourth for the Red Hawks, while Santiago Hernandez finished sixth at 145lbs.

The Atchison Redmen was led by a pair of second place finishes on the day as Andrew Adrian (120lbs) and Spencer Vice (132lbs) each earned second. Adrian posted a 2-1 record with a 9-2 decision and 13-2 major decision win. Dalton Armstrong grabbed a third place finish for the Redmen after going 3-1 in competition at 138lbs.

For Marysville, four Bulldogs earned Top six performances as Gabe Capp (145lbs) took fourth place, Skyler Ballman (126lbs and Seth Mooradian (160lbs) each placed fifth and Michael Crome (160lbs) finished sixth.
