Sabetha Bluejays Girl's Tennis Team Notches Pair of Eleventh Place Finishes at 3-2-1A State Tourney

Girl's Tennis wrapped up over the weekend with the State competitions across the State and the 3-2-1A competition took place in Dodge City with Sabetha and Marysville, representing the area.

It was the Bluejays highlighting things for the area performers as the Bluejays came home with a pair of 11th place finishes at State. In singles competition it was Lexi Wenger picking an 11th place showing for the Bluejays as she finished State competition with a 4-2 record. Wenger opened State with a 6-1, 6-0 win over a competitor from Victoria, but then fell to a Wichita Collegiate competitor in the second round, falling 6-0, 6-0. That put Wenger in the consolation bracket were she won 9-3, but then fell 9-2, putting her in the 11th place match to finish competition. In the 11th place match Lexi picked up the 9-5 win to cap off her State experience with a win, beating Rachel Frese of Marysville.

Courtney Plattner also competed for the Bluejays in singles at State, going 0-2 in competition falling 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the opening round and then 9-4 in the consolation bracket.

In doubles competition it was the Bluejay tandem of Jordyn Wells and Alexa Menold that brought home an 11th place finish. Wells and Menold opened competition with a win over a team from Meade, winning 6-0, 6-0, but fell in the second round 6-2, 6-1 to a team from Haven. The loss sent Jordyn and Alexa to the consolation bracket where they strung a pair of 9-4 and 9-6 wins together, but then took a 9-4 and then 9-7 losses pushing them to the 11th place match. In the 11th place competition the Bluejay tandem picked up tht 9-1 win to finish their State competition with a 4-3.

The Bluejay team of Jena Winkler and Nicole Brey also competed at State, going 0-2 in competition with a 7-6 (2), 6-0 loss in the opening round and then 9-2 in the consolation bracket.

For Marysville, Frese posted the best showing finishing 12th in singles competition with a 1-3 record. Frese had a first round bye and then won her first match 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the winner's bracket, before falling 6-3, 6-0 in the next round and then 9-4 in a consolation bracket game. That put her in the 11th place match which she fell to Sabetha Bluejay, Wenger. Megan Hill also competed for Marysville in singles competition, going 0-2 in competition with a 6-2, 6-1 loss in the opening round and then lost 9-3 in the consolation bracket.

In doubles competition, the team of Lauren Hawkinson and Madison Nieberding had a first round bye, but then suffered a 6-3, 6-0 loss, falling to the consolation bracket, were they stayed alive with a 9-1 win but bowed out of the tournament with a 9-6 loss in their next match, going 1-2 in competition. Casey Cohorst and Maddie Ellenbecker also competed for Marysville as a doubles tandem, going 0-2 in competition falling 6-1, 6-4 in the opening round and then 9-4 in consolation action.
