Hiawatha Girl's and Sabetha Boy's Claim Big Seven Cross Country Team Titles

On Thursday all nine Big Seven League schools to the course at Shawnee North Community Center to race in the League cross country meet looking to capture a League title.

At the end of the day the Hiawatha Red Hawk girl's and the Sabetha Bluejay boy's grabbed League teams championships lead by individual League titles. For the lady Red Hawks, seven girl's in the Top 16 is what paced them to a first place team finish, tallying 34 points taking first by 19 points over ACCHS who took second place, while Royal Valley girl's finished third. Sabetha, Holton, Jeff West and Nemaha Central rounded out the team performances finishing fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.

On the boys side of competition the Sabetha Bluejays just edged out Hiawatha for the League title beating the Red Hawks by one-point finishing with 59 to Hiawatha's 60 points. Nemaha Central claimed third place as a team, while Holton finished fourth, Royal Valley fifth and Jeff West placed sixth as a team.

For Hiawatha on their way to the girls’ team title, Jordan Puvogel paced the way claiming the individual League title behind a time of 16:19.51. While, Molly Kettler, Aly Shamburg and Courtney Brockhoff also finished in the Top 10 placing sixth (17:23.45), eighth (17:30.11) and ninth (17:31.35), respectively. Three more Red Hawks tallied Top 20 finishes as Kailey Davis, Emma Williams and Makena Gilpin placed 14th (18:20.83), 15th (18:22.50) and 16th (18:46.97), respectively. In the boys competition Brandt Houk paced the Red Hawks with a second place finish posting a time of 18:01.04, while Jess Quinn placed seventh (18:51.00) and Gavin Lierz finished 15th (19:37.41).

Sabetha flew to the first place boys’ team finish behind a first place performance by Keegan Cox who posted a time of 17:53.45 to claim first. Corbin Cox notched the only other Sabetha Top 20 finish in the boy’s race placing fifth with a time of 18:46.83. In the girls race, Taryn Schuette led the Bluejays with a seventh place finish behind a time of 17:27.80, while Miranda Huettner placed 17th (18:47.80) and Emily Strathman took home 20th place (18:59.87) for the Bluejays.

ACCHS notched a pair of bronze medal individual performances with Madison Bissell taking third in the girl’s race with a time of 17:06.54 and Jack Siebert placing third in the boys race behind a time of 18:26.18. Beba Scholz, Maddison Forbes and Mackenzie Forbes all grabbed Top 15 performances for the lady Tigers placing fifth (17:22.59), 12th (17:59.11) and 13th (18:09.92), respectively.

For Nemaha Central the Thunder's best League performances came in the boys competition as Mikeal Sperfslage place fourth behind a time of 18:42.72, while Colin Lierz took home eighth place with a time of 18:54.28 and DJ Wykert placed 18th (20:04.29).

Royal Valley Panthers had six runners earn Top 20 finishes at League with three coming in each race. On the girls side of competition Katie Hanson led the Panthers with a 10th place finish, posting a time of 17:35.68, while Kaytlyn Gooderal placed 11th (17:46.93) and Tamo Thomas finished 19th (18:54.41). In the boys race it was Patrick Broxterman putting up the best Panther performance placing 10th (19:16.92), while his teammates Eugene Masquat and Kwaki Spoonhunter placed 13th (19:30.51) and 14th (19:36.03), respectively.

The Holton Wildcats had three Top 20 finishes in the League meet as Tristan Parks and Riley Starder placed 11th (19:21.60) and 12th (19:28.16), respectively, while in the girl's race Emily Degenhardt grabbed the lone Top 20 finish for the Wildcats placing 18th (18:51.25).

For the host of this year's Big Seven League meet the Jeff West Tigers three Top 20 finishes were earned with Makenzie Tucker pacing the way after a fourth place finish in the girls race, by posting a time of 17:10.55. On the boy’s side of competition Conner Mickens and Austin Irvine finished 16th (19:42.93) and 19th (20:12.66), respectively.

The Riverside Cyclones were led at League by the performance of Cole Hinton who raced his way to a sixth place performance in the boy’s competition, posting a time of 18:48.84. Tristan Hinton also finished in the Top 10 of the boys race placing ninth (19:01.36), while Kevin Ross placed 20th (20:18.96).

Perry Lecompton Kaws at League saw a pair of Top 20 finishes picked up as Lexia Jamison raced her way to second place in the girl's competition with a time of 16:51.24, while Bjorn Funk finished 17th in the boys race posting a time of 19:45.91.

Next up is Regionals for many of the Big Seven League teams, while a few will compete one final time in regular season action on Tuesday, October 21st before Regionals.
