After opening up the season with tournament action the Highland Community College Scotties volleyball team took to their home court for the first time on Wednesday and welcomed Independence Community College to town for a KJCCC matchup. At the end of the night the Scotties improved to 2-3 on the year and 1-0 in conference play with a five set win over Independence CC.

The Scotties started the match by taking a closely contest set 1 25-23, but Independence quickly bounced back knocking off Highland in set two and three with 25-23 and 25-18 set wins. Highland needing a set four victory to push the matchup to a fifth and final set, the Scotties worked past Independence 25-20 in set four to force that fifth set. In the fifth set it went down to the wire and the Scotties ultimately claimed the win, winning the fifth set 15-13.

Centralia native, Kaitlyn Koch lead the team in kills on the night registering nine in the win, while picking up three digs, two block assists and an ace. Madison Wagar (Saskatchewan, Canada) and Briley Ware (Arkansas City, KS) followed Koch up with eight kills each on the night, while Wagner added four digs and Ware had 14 digs and a pair of block assists. The duo of Leah Rader (Joplin, MO) and Megan Lockwood (Silver Lake, KS) each posted double digit digs for the Scotties on the night with 16 and 17, respectively, while Rader notched six kills, also. Setter, Michaela Serrioz (Gardner, KS) set up her teammates to the tune of 27 assists, while adding three kills and six digs to her night.

Scotties get back to the court on Friday, August 29th as they host Doane College JV team at 6:30pm and then travel to Coffeyville to take on Coffeyville CC on Wednesday, September 3rd.
