2014 Kanzaland American Legion NEKL All-League Team

The 2014 Legion baseball season has come to a close and despite only having six teams in the League this year the Northeast Kansas League sent three teams to Legion State tournaments for the third time in the last six years.

Doniphan County hosted the AA State tournament and Sabetha joined them their after winning the AA Zone 5 tournament, while Atchison finished second in their AAA Zone NE to qualify for State. Doniphan County posted the best record at State going 1-2, falling 7-0 to Fort Scott the eventual champs in round one, topping Ellis 11-2 in an elimination contest on day two and then ending their year with a tough 2-1 loss to Larned on day three. For Sabetha they participated in the State tournament for the sixth time in the last eight years and this year went 0-2, falling to Larned in a tough 2-1 loss in the opening round and then falling to Silver Lake in a 6-4 contest. For Atchison they were back at State in the AAA level for the first time since 2011 and went 0-2 with a pair of one-run losses, falling 7-6 to Pittsburg and 9-8 to Arkansas City.

During the season it was Doniphan County claiming the NEKL tournament title for the first time since 2008 and also went on to win the regular season title finished the year 23-11 and 14-2 in league play. Seneca finished second in the League with a 12-5 League record and 14-8 overall mark, while Sabetha finished 27-17 and 11-6 in the League for third place. Frankfort, Atchison and Hiawatha rounded out the standings finishing fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Frankfort wrapped up the years with a 10-15 record and 6-9 in the League, while Atchison was 14-17 and 5-12 in League play and Hiawatha finished 3-17 in League action and 7-27 overall.

Doniphan County hads four players on this year’s NEKL Legion All-League team. For Doniphan County, Phoenix Keller leads the charge earning League MVP honors this year after being selected All-League at first base last year. While, his teammates Caleb Winkel, Nathan Gaarder and Jeffrey Watts all earned All-League honors, also. Winkel and Gaarder both in the infield at second and third base, respectively and for Watts at pitcher. For Gaarder it's his second straight year for All-League honors at third base.

Sabetha had a quartet earn All-League honors, also as Keegan Schuman, Dustin Boeckman, Gaven Schuman and Taylor Bauman all earned the honors. For Keegan Schuman and Bauman it's the second time earning All-League honors, at shortstop and outfield, respectively. While Boeckman earned the nod at outfield and Gaven Schuman at pitcher.

Seneca had a trio of Rottinghaus' earn All-League honors this year with Cody Rottinghaus getting the nod at pitcher, Dustin Rottinghaus at utility and Alex Rottinghaus at outfield. While, Atchison also had a trio make All-League with Brian Scott at outfield, Tanner Huntington at first base and Mark McDermed at pitcher.

Both Frankfort and Hiawatha each had a pair of guys earn All-League honors this season. For Frankfort Sam Steinlage got the nod at utility and Lucas Adams at catcher, while Taylor Jacobsen and Dakota Bayles each earned All-League at utility for Hiawatha. For Bayles it's his third straight year on the All-League team.

*Doniphan County won the NEKL regular season title (12-2 league record)
*Doniphan County won the NEKL tournament for the first time since 2008
*Hiawatha took second place at the Marysville Classic, Sabetha finished third and Frankfort placed fourth
*Atchison took second and Doniphan County third in the Doniphan County tournament
*Atchison finished second in the Tristch tournament (Marysville won tournament)
*Sabetha won AA Zone 5 Tournament (made State for 6th time in last 8 years – finished 0-2 at AA State Tournament)
