Doniphan County Stays Alive, While Sabetha's Season Ends in Day Two of AA State Legion Tournament

Looking to stay alive in the AA State Legion baseball tournament Sabetha and Doniphan County went into the day each needing a win to stave off elimination. Doniphan County got the win they needed topping Ellis 11-2, while Sabetha fell to Silver Lake 6-4 to see their season come to an end.

The day got underway with Sabetha squaring off with Silver Lake and Silver Lake pounced early scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning on three hit batters, a walk and infield bunt hit, as Sabetha starter Jake Meyer struggled and didn't make it out of the first inning. Tyler Hackney took over for Meyer on the mound but gave up a pair of runs of his own in the bottom of the second, which included a solo homerun by Tyler Brown for Silver Lake as they led 6-0 after two innings.

But, Hackney and the Sabetha defense stymied Silver Lake after that and started to mount a comeback late in the game. The Sabetha Raptors left the bases loaded in the top of the third with three walks, but broke through in the fifth to score a pair of runs on two hit batters, a walk, double and RBI single, making it 6-2 at that point, but also left the bases loaded in the inning. The Raptors continued to chip away in the top of the sixth scoring two more runs on two walks and two hits, including a RBI double by Dustin Boeckman, making it a 6-4 game.

Down to their final three outs, Sabetha was shut down in the top of the seventh as Brown earned the four out save coming in relief in the sixth inning for Silver Lake, to help them preserve their 6-4 lead and get the win.

Drake McMillan and Jace Freeman led the Silver Lake offense with 2-3 games as McMillan was 2-3 with a triple and Freeman 2-3 with an RBI and HBP. Brown added a 1-3 game with a solo homerun, walk, reached on an error and two runs scored. Silver Lake improved to 18-10 on the season with the win and remained alive in the tournament.

Sabetha in the loss had only four hits coming from Keegan Schumann, Talyor Bauman, Boeckman and Blake Popkess. Schumann finished the game 1-1 with a run scored, RBI, two walks and HBP to earn McDonald's "Player of the Game" on KNZA. The Raptors wrapped up their season with a 27-17 record falling in their first two games at State.

For Doniphan County the offense awoke late in their matchup against Ellis and it paced them to a 11-2 win and kept them alive at the State tournament.

Ellis took the early lead using two hits and a Doniphan County error in the bottom of the first to score two runs. Doniphan County got one back in the top of the third with an RBI single by Nathan Gaarder, to make it a 2-1 Ellis lead. Gaarder after giving up two runs in the first on the mound gave up just three more hits to Ellis in the game and limited their opportunities, opening the door for Doniphan County to get the win.

In the fifth Tucker Morris gave Doniphan County the lead with a three run blast, while Doniphan County added another run in the sixth and the offense busted open in the top of the seventh for six more runs to take a commanding 11-2 leading. In the seven, Doniphan County had five of their 15 hits and drew three walks with the frame highlighted by Gaarder's two run homerun.

Gaarder earned the win on the mound going all seven innings giving up just two runs on five hits, two walks and struck out two, while offensively going 4-5 with a two run homerun, three RBI's and two runs scored to earn McDonald's "Player of the Game" on KNZA. Caleb Winkel added a 3-5 game with two runs scored and two RBI's, while Phoenix Keller was 2-4 with a run scored an HBP, Tucker Morris finished 2-5 with a three run homerun, run scored and three RBI's and Jeffrey Watts was 2-4 with a run scored and walk.

Ellis in the loss had hits from Koltyn Ratliff who was 3-4 with a run scored and triple, while Cole Pfeifer and Blake Hudson had the teams other two hits. Cole Pfeifer took the loss pitching five innings giving up 4 runs on eight hits, four walks and struck out five, while Scott Pfeifer pitched the final two innings giving up seven runs on seven hits, four walks, a HB, balk and struck out two.

With the win Doniphan County improved to 23-10 on the season and remained alive in the tournament while Ellis closed their season with a 16-15 record.

In the nightcap in the winner's bracket it was Concordia topping Larned 9-6 and Fort Scott beat Ottawa 6-4.

In the first game of the nightcap Larned took the early lead plating two runs in the first on a hit and Concordia error, but Concordia responded in the second inning scoring five to hold a 5-2 lead after two innings. Concordia used six hits, including a pair of doubles in the second to plate the five runs, while stretching the lead in the fourth with three more runs on two hits, including a Bowe Behymer homerun that hit the scoreboard and a Larned error, making it 8-2 going into the fifth.

Larned got back into the game with a four run fifth using just two hits in the inning making it 8-6, when Concordia added an insurance run in the sixth on a solo homerun to give Concordia the 9-6 lead and ultimately the game finished at that mark.

In the loss Larned had only four hits, but did get eight walks offensively as Mason Schartz paced the offense going 2-3 with a double and Camryn Bryant and Evan Skelton each had a hit. Trey Kraisinger took the loss on the mound going six innings giving up nine runs on 10 hits, four walks and a hit batter, as Larned fell to 14-15 on the season. Concorida was paced by Behymer who was 3-4, while Tanner Gilbert went 2-4 and Jordan Mehl finished 2-2 with two walks and pitched four and two-thirds innings. Skyler Hittle closed the game on the mound for Concordia earning the save, improving Concordia to 28-5 on the year.

Finishing up day two action at the AA State Legion tournament it was familiar matchup of Fort Scott and Ottawa meeting up for the fifth time this season and Fort Scott for the fourth time got the best of Ottawa claiming the 6-4 win.

The first four frames were a pitching duel as the starters Mason Knopp for Fort Scott and Nathan Roth for Ottawa each gave up just two hits in the first four innings. In the bottom of the fifth Ottawa struck with the first runs of the game using four walks, a Fort Scott error and two hits to score four runs and lead 4-0.

Fort Scott answered in the top of the sixth with a four run inning of their own using three hits and an Ottawa error to tie the game at 4-4. Headed to the top of the seventh tied Fort Scott pounced again using two hits and another Ottawa error to score two runs and take the 6-4 lead and ultimately claiming the win as Ottawa got a two-out base runner in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't do anything with him.

Knopp paced Fort Scott to their 21st win of the season as the improved to 21-4 with Knopp tossing the complete game going seven innings giving up four runs on six hits, six walks and struck out six. Kaleb DeLaTorre offensively had a pair of hits, while Jacob Bradbury and Chase Brown each had 1-3 games. Bradbury walked, two run scored a reached on errors twice, while Brown had two runs scored, a double and walk. Ottawa with the loss fell to 25-11 on the year as Jordan Morton had a two hit game with a walk, Hayden Yancey posted a double and a walk and Dayne Jung ahd two hits. Nathan Roth took the loss on the mound as the Ottawa starter, while Morton finished the game on the mound.

Day three action will see the host Doniphan County face off against Larned at 10:00am Friday, August 1st in an elimination game and then Ottawa will play Silver Lake following that game, with the winners of those games playing each other at approximately 8:30pm Friday night in another elimination game. At 6:00pm the winner's bracket contest between Concordia and Fort Scott will take place in Wathena.
