It was an action packed night of Legion baseball as Zone tournaments continued at the AA and AAA level and the Junior Legion State tournament continued, too with an area team.

At Somerset Park in Zone 5 AA tournament play it was Doniphan County taking on Seneca in an Zone elimination game and Seneca kept their season alive with a 6-5 win.

Seneca got on the board first as Justice McKernan reached on an infield single in the bottom of the first inning and came around to score, making it 1-0. Doniphan County got their first tallying on the board in the top of the second using four walks to tie the game at 1-1. Seneca regained the lead in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Cody Rottinghaus, making it 2-1, but Doniphan County came back with a run in the top of the third to tie the game again.

Doniphan County did the only scoring for the middle innings scoring a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings making it 5-2 going into the bottom of the sixth. A triple by Tucker Morris and RBI single by Phoenix Keller posted a run in the fourth, a double by Chris Winkel and RBI single by Reid Greaser scored a run in the fifth and a solo homerun in the sixth by Nathan Gaarder posted the run in the sixth for Doniphan County. During that same time Keller was dealing on the mound in relief coming in at pitcher in the second inning and allowed just two base runners against himself from the second through the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth Seneca's offense broke through again scoring four runs to regain the lead in the contest. Matt Haverkamp had an RBI double, while McKernan notched a RBI single and Cody Rottinghaus followed that with a two run homer, giving Seneca the 6-5 advantage. Doniphan County got the leadoff man on in the top of the seventh via a walk but that would be it as Cody Rottinghaus earned the save on the mound recording two strikeouts in the final three outs of the game.

It was Alex Rottinghaus earning the win on the mound in four innings of relief for starter Kurtis Niehues for Seneca, while offensively Cody Rottinghaus finished the night 2-4 with three RBI's, a run scored and two run homerun and McKernan was 2-4 with two runs scored, an RBI and reached on an error. With the win Seneca improved to 14-7 on the season and moves to the Zone Championship versus Sabetha, needing to win twice to win the Zone. Action at Somerset Park starts tonight at 6:00pm and will be on Kanzaland radio.

For Doniphan County the loss moves them to 22-9 on the season as they now look to regroup for the AA State tournament, which they host next week in Wathena. Keller paced the offense for Doniphan County in the loss with a 2-4 night with a run scored and RBI, while the team drew nine walks and had two hit batters, but stranded 12 runners on the night.

Atchison Earns Spot at AAA State Tournament

A win and Atchison's season continues that is what the A's needed going into their contest on Thursday night in the AAA NE Zone at Emporia and that they got, taking second place in the Zone behind a 12-8 win over Leavenworth. Emporia beat Leavenworth earlier in the day 6-1 to win their Zone.

The A's opened the scoring for the game in the top of the first inning as Jake Schmidt notched an RBI triple scoring Cody Calhoon to make it 1-0. Atchison added another in the second as Brian Scott hit a triple and Calhoon brought him in making it 2-0 going into the third.

Leavenworth took the lead for the first time in the game at 3-2 going into the seventh and Atchison regained the lead in the top of the seventh with four runs, to lead 6-3. Atchison didn't stop adding runs tallying three more in the eighth to lead 9-3 and added three more in the top of the ninth. Leading 12-4, Atchison moved three outs away from a State tournament bid going into the bottom of the ninth and Leavenworth battled for four runs but the margin proved to be took much for Leavenworth and Atchison won 12-8.

Atchison moved to 14-15 on the season and finished second in the AAA NE Zone at Emporia earning a spot in the AAA State tournament in Pittsburg starting next Wednesday, July 30th.

Doniphan County Junior Legion Win Second Straight at State Tournament

After opening the Junior Legion State tournament with an 11-10 win over Manhattan, the Doniphan County Junior's moved on in the winner's bracket of the tournament and drew the defending junior champs, Paola. The game was all Doniphan County as they dominated all the way to a 9-0 five inning victory. Cooper Leach threw a two-hit shutout for Doniphan County to help spur them to the win.

In the loser's bracket, McPherson beat Dodge City 11-1 in four innings and Manhattan topped Geiger-Ready Mix 14-6 to both stay alive. The loser's bracket games will start the action on Friday, July 25th with Salina playing Manhattan at 10:00am and then McPherson will play Paola at 12:30pm.
