The senior legion baseball regular came to a close on Thursday night for the final NEKL team as Atchison swept Oskaloosa in a non-league doubleheader winning 8-0 and 2-1. Now teams turn their attention to postseason play with the Zone tournaments coming up next week.

Regular season wraps up with Doniphan County claiming the NEKL title finishing 14-2 in League action and 21-7 overall and became just the third team in the League in the last 11 years to win both the regular season League title and NEKL tournament title. Last year's League champs, Seneca finished second in the League going 12-5 in League play and 12-6 overall on the season, while Sabetha finishes third in the League with an 11-6 League mark and 23-15 overall record.

Frankfort, Atchison and Hiawatha finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively in the League as the NEKL only had six teams this season. Frankfort wrapped up the regular season 6-9 in League action and 9-13 overall, while Atchison with their two wins Thursday night finished 12-14 overall in the regular season and 5-12 in League play. Hiawatha rounds out the League standings finishing 7-25 overall in the regular season and 3-17 in League play.

Teams now focus on Zone tournament play starting on Monday as the NEKL will be represented in three different Zone tournaments, which are double elimination tournaments.

Atchison will play in the AAA NE Zone hosted by Emporia next week and will have Osawatomie and Leavenworth in the bracket. Also Atchison opens Zone play on Wednesday, July 23rd against the host Emporia at 5:30pm.

The other five League teams play at the AA level and four of the five will play in the same Zone tournament as Sabetha will host Zone five. Seneca, Hiawatha and Doniphan County will all be in the Zone at Somerset Park, along with non-NEKL team Marysville. The action will start on Monday, July 21st night with Seneca playing Marysville at 6:00pm, followed by Hiawatha playing Sabetha at 8:00pm; both games will be broadcasted on Kanzaland radio. Doniphan County will play the winner of Hiawatha and Sabetha on Tuesday night for their first game in the Zone tournament. If Doniphan County wins the Zone the second play team in the Zone tournament will qualify for State, as Doniphan County already has a spot in the State tournament as the host this year. For the full Zone five bracket see above link.

Frankfort is the lone NEKL AA team not playing in the Zone tournament at Sabetha as they will participate in the Zone four tournament hosted by Silver Lake, which also involves Westmoreland (Rock Creek) and Clay Center. Frankfort will play Rock Creek in the opening round of Zone tournament play on Monday, July 21st at 8:15pm. For the full Zone four bracket see above link.

At the Junior Legion level, Doniphan County earned a spot in the State tournament at Leavenworth next week starting July 23rd, by beating Atchison twice on Thursday night in Zone seven at Lansing. Doniphan County won game one 7-3 in nine innings to force a game two and then topped Atchison 9-6 in game two to win Zone.

For all the Senior Legion Zone tournament pairings see the above link. Zone tournaments get underway on Monday, for Senior Legion baseball teams.
