Hiawatha Splits Legion Baseball Doubleheader with Marysville

In action on Friday night, Hiawatha Post 66 played host to Marysville and would split the doubleheader picking up their sixth win of the season in the process. Hiawatha claimed game one 8-6, while game two was all Marysville as they won 12-2.

Game one saw Marysville take the early lead scoring a run in the top of the first and the game remained 1-0 until Hiawatha broke through to take the lead behind a two-run bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a Taylor Jacobsen RBI double. Marysville quickly answered with the largest half inning of the game plating four-runs in the top of the fifth to hold a 5-2 advantage, as a Triston Hormann two RBI double, three walks and a hit batter led to the four-runs. Hiawatha wouldn't be stifled as they tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with three-runs of their own on five hits, including an RBI double by Dakota Bayles. Marysville went on to add another run, but Hiawatha added three more to secure the 8-6 win.

Jacobsen paced the Hiawatha offense going 3-4 with a double, two RBI's and reaching on an error, helping his cause on the mound as he picked up the win going five and two-thirds innings giving up five runs (two earned) on five hits, five walks, two hit batters and four strikeouts. Ryker Smith and Parker Hasenkamp finished the pitching duties off in the game with Hasenkamp earning the save. While Bayles and Brendan Steele each added multi-hit game, as Bayles finished 2-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBI's, while Steele finished 2-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and walk.

Marysville in the loss was led by Hormann who went 2-4 with a run scored, two RBI's and double, while Tommy Brinegar added a 2-4 contest. Brinegar started the game going four innings giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits, three walks and three strikeouts, but Jayton Haggard took the loss in two innings of relief.

In game two behind 10 hits and five Hiawatha errors Marysville cruised to the 12-2 win to earn the doubleheader split. Marysville got on the board early with four-runs in the top of the first and added a run in the third, four more in the fourth and three more in the top of the fifth. Hiawatha scored their lone two-runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning.

Trey Loshe gave up just two-runs in five innings for Marysville on the mound on just three hits, four walks and two hit batters to earn the win. While his offense gave him plenty of run support and three guys finished with a multi-hit game. Garrett Crome finished 2-4 with a run scored, two RBI's, while CJ Becker added a 2-4 game and Brock Watts notched a 2-3 night with two runs scored, an RBI with a double and triple.

Hiawatha in the loss finished with only three hits but did have eight free passes; Bayles finished 2-3 with a run scored and RBI, while Smith had the other hit. Bayles took the loss on the mound going three innings as the starter giving up seven runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk.

With the split on the night Hiawatha moved to 6-22 on the season and will be action next on Sunday, July 13th at home in another non-league doubleheader starting at 3:00pm at Noble Park against Wamego.
